Memoir 36 – The Geological Record of Neoproterozoic Glaciations
In recent years, interest in Neoproterozoic glaciations has grown as their pivotal role in Earth system evolution has become increasingly clear. One of the main goals of the IGCP Project number 512 was to produce a synthesis of newly available information on Neoproterozoic successions worldwide similar in format to Hambrey & Harlands (1981) Earths pre Pleistocene Glacial Record. This Memoir therefore consists of a series of overview chapters followed by site-specific chapters. The overview chapters cover key topics including the history of research on Neoproterozoic glaciations, identification of glacial deposits, chemostratigraphic techniques and datasets, palaeomagnetism, biostratigraphy, geochronology and climate modelling. The site specific chapters for 60 successions worldwide include reviews of the history of research on these rocks and up-to-date syntheses of the structural framework, tectonic setting, palaeomagnetic and geochronological constraints, physical, biological, and chemical stratigraphy, and descriptions of the glaciogenic and associated strata, including economic deposits.

Reflections on Judging

Richard A. Posner, "Reflections on Judging"
English | ISBN: 0674725085 | 2013 | 332 pages | PDF | 2 MB

Reflections on Judging
In "," Richard Posner distills the experience of his thirty-one years as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Surveying how the judiciary has changed since his 1981 appointment, he engages the issues at stake today, suggesting how lawyers should argue cases and judges decide them, how trials can be improved, and, most urgently, how to cope with the dizzying pace of technological advance that makes litigation ever more challenging to judges and lawyers. For Posner, legal formalism presents one of the main obstacles to tackling these problems. Formalist judges–most notably Justice Antonin Scalia–needlessly complicate the legal process by advocating "canons of constructions" (principles for interpreting statutes and the Constitution) that are confusing and self-contradictory. Posner calls instead for a renewed commitment to legal realism, whereby a good judge gathers facts, carefully considers context, and comes to a sensible conclusion that avoids inflicting collateral damage on other areas of the law. This, Posner believes, was the approach of the jurists he most admires and seeks to emulate: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louis Brandeis, Benjamin Cardozo, Learned Hand, Robert Jackson, and Henry Friendly, and it is an approach that can best resolve our twenty-first-century legal disputes.

Design Research – Theories, Methodologies, and Product Modelling by S. Culley
"Design Research – Theories, Methodologies and Product Modelling" is one of four books resulting from the contributions to the 13th International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED 01), held in August 2001 in Glasgow Scotland. The ICED conference series was initiated by Workshop Design-Konstruktion (WDK) in 1981 and has grown to become one of the most pre-eminent conferences in the field. From the beginning, ICED has offered a platform for the discussion of new trends, developments and research findings in the areas of product development, design support techniques, design processes, design science and design education. ICED conferences cover all aspects and disciplines of engineering design, and over the years have become the forum for establishing, maintaining and improving contacts and cooperation between researchers and engineers working in engineering design from countries all over the world. "Design Research – Theories, Methodologies and Product Modelling" covers two main groups – firstly, those concerned with underpinning design theories, research frameworks and methodologies, and, secondly, those concerned with the representation of products and systems. Also included is an invited paper that reviews the contribution of ICED to engineering design research and practice. The first section goes on to address issues about the nature and philosophy of design, different design theories, how to model and manage complexity in design, research methodologies, and models of the design process, creativity and innovation. The second section is on product and system modelling. Contributions highlighting the difficulties and methods of product data management, the use of sketching and vague models in conceptual design, functional and feature-based modelling, and CAD are provided. The latest applications and developments in virtual reality, and standards for exchange of product information all go to make up a comprehensive review of current progress.

Liberals: A History of the Liberal Party, 1850-2004
The Liberal Party, the party of Gladstone, Asquith and Lloyd George, was a dominant force in Britain, and the world, at the height of the power of the British Empire. It emerged in mid-Victorian Britain from a combination of Whigs and Peelite Tories. Split by Gladstone's Home Rule Bills, it nevertheless returned to power in Edwardian England and held it until after the outbreak the First World War. Riddled by internal divisions and with its traditional ground increasingly occupied by Labour, the party lost ground in Parliament, becoming little more than a token for many years. With the foundation of the Social Democrats in 1981, and their subsequent merger with the Liberals as Liberal Democrats in 1988, a modern version of the party emerged, under Paddy Ashdown and now Charles Kennedy as a significant third force in British politics.

The Long-Term Success of Mergers and Acquisitions in the International Automotive Supply Industry
As a result of economic and structural changes, the automotive supply industry has been facing significant consolidation activity over the last twenty years. The pressure to produce better equipped and less expensive automobiles has created a growing trend towards specialization and internationalization. Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are now considered as a common strategic response to this trend. Based on a sample of 230 M&A between 1981 and 2007, Jan-Peer Laabs challenges the short-term return behavior of acquirers in this industry in contrast to their long-term performance based on capital market and financial accounting information. For this purpose, he combines the two most advanced and updated capital market methodologies with a thorough analysis of published accounting information. A clearly negative yet consistent perspective on the long-term value creation potential emerges across the different empirical analysis. Over the three years following M&A transactions, acquirers appear to lose significant value. However, an additional case study on the takeover of Siemens VDO by Continental AG offers a number of valuable key success factors and insights on how to evade the negative return destiny.
