Statistics for Terrified Biologists
"We highly recommend it-not just for statistically terrified biology students and faculty, but also for those who are occasionally anxious or uncertain. In addition to being a good starting point to learn statistics, it is a useful place to return to refresh your memory." -The Quarterly Review of Biology, March 2009 "During the entire course of my Ph.D. I’ve been (embarrasingly) looking for a way to teach myself the fundamentals of statistical analysis. At this point in my education, I’ve come to realize that often times, simply knowing the basics is enough for you to properly apply even the most complex analytical methods. ' has been just such a book – it was more than worth the $40 I spent on it, and while my ‘book clubs’ aren’t meant to be reviews, I highly recommend the book to anyone who’s in a similar predicament to my own." -Carlo Artieri’s Blog Book Club The typical biology student is "hardwired" to be wary of any tasks involving the application of mathematics and statistical analyses, but the plain fact is much of biology requires interpretation of experimental data through the use of statistical methods. This unique textbook aims to demystify statistical formulae for the average biology student. Written in a lively and engaging style, draws on the author's 30 years of lecturing experience. One of the foremost entomologists of his generation, van Emden has an extensive track record for successfully teaching statistical methods to even the most guarded of biology students. For the first time basic methods are presented using straightforward, jargon-free language. Students are taught to use simple formulae accurately to interpret what is being measured with each test and statistic, while at the same time learning to recognize overall patterns and guiding principles. Complemented by simple illustrations and useful case studies, this is an ideal statistics resource tool for undergraduate biology and environmental science students who lack confidence in their mathematical abilities.

Elmer Pendell, "Why Civilizations Self-Destruct"
1977 | ISBN-10: 0914576070 | 198 pages | PDF | 3 MB

Why Civilizations Self-Destruct
Dr. Pendell's book is of major importance because it explains more simply, more clearly and more accurately than any other work the reasons for the decline not only of our own civilization but for all previous civilizations.

Mr. Pendell book discusses the human evolution from its origins to the present. He focalise on the issue that humans evolution is improved by harsh conditions that where present during the Ice ages, since only the more intelligent elements would survive. As climate improved the less capable outbreed the more intelligent.
As examples of his these he bring forth archeological samples of the Cro-Magnon man whose brain was about 30% bigger than modern man. Also early Neanderthal man of the Neolithic during an ice age had a bigger brain than the Neanderthal man of the mild Mesolithic age.
He comes to present day United States Welfare policies and shows the skyrocketing devolution happening in just a few decades of liberal policies.

A Tapestry of Orbits
English | Astronomy, Cosmology, Physics | 21. August 2008 | ISBN-10: 0521017327 | 256 pages | Djvu | 2 mb
Satellites as they cross the night sky look like moving stars, which can be accurately tracked by an observer with binoculars as well as by giant radars and large cameras.

A Tapestry of Orbits
These observations help to determine the satellite's orbit, which is sensitive to the drag of the upper atmosphere and to any irregularities in the gravity field of the Earth. Analysis of the orbit can be used to evaluate the density of the upper atmosphere and to define the shape of the Earth. Desmond King-Hele was the pioneer of this technique of orbit analysis, and this book tells us how the research began, before the launch of Sputnik in 1957. For thirty years King-Hele and his colleagues at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, developed and applied the technique to reveal much about the Earth and air at a very modest cost. In the 1960s the upper-atmosphere density was thoroughly mapped out for 100 to 2000 km, revealing immense variation of density with solar activity and between day and night. In the 1970s and 1980s a picture of the upper-atmosphere winds emerged, and the profile of the pear-shaped Earth was accurately charted. The number of satellites now orbiting the earth is over 5000. This book is the story of how this inexpensive research of their orbits developed to yield a rich harvest of knowledge about the Earth and its atmosphere, in a scientific narrative that is enlivened with many personal experiences.

English | 1995 | ISBN: 0780310918 | 468 pages | PDF | 51.89 MB

Handbook of Real-Time Fast Fourier Transforms: Algorithms to Product Testing
""This useful, logical, unbiased, FFT compendium allows the user to quickly and accurately obtain practical information to implement a solution or simply acquire a general overview without spending months gathering this information elsewhere."
-Jay Perry, Executive Vice President, Technology, Catalina Research, Inc.

"This is a practical guide for understanding and using FFTs. Win's (Winthrop Smith, author) years of experience using FFTs to solve real-world problems comes through on page after page. If you're building an FFT processor, you'll find this book indispensable."
-Tony Agnello, President, Ariel Corp.

FFTs are at the heart of ADSL, the new telecom standard (T1.413), which allows phones to transfer digital data 200 times faster and simultaneously transmit speech. Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) synthesize, recognize, enhance, compress, modify, or analyze signals in products such as Doppler weather radar, CT and MRI scans, AWACS radar, and satellite imaging radar. In this book, you will get the foundation and facts you need to implement FFT algorithms for many diverse applications. Key features you will put to immediate use include:
– Comparison matrices and performance measures for objective selection of weighting functions, algorithm building blocks, algorithms, algorithm mappings, arithmetic formats, and DSP chips
– Extensive algorithm examples with instructions for memory mapping and conversion to code
– An unbiased listing of the FFT features of 51 fixed-point DSP chips, including ASIC and multiprocessor chips, 13 floating-point DSP chips, and six dedicated FFT chips
– Test signals with instructions and examples on how to detect and isolate errors during: FFT algorithm/code development and debugging, and end-product operation
– Design examples for products that use frequency analysis, power spectrum estimation, linear filtering, and two-dimensional processing
– Questions and answers for selecting commercial-off-the-shelf DSP boards

An all-in-one-source for implementing real-time FFT algorithms of any length, this book will be essential to engineers and other technical innovators who want to stay on the cutting edge of FFT technology."

Interest Rate Derivatives: Valuation, Calibration and Sensitivity Analysis

FREEDownload : Interest Rate Derivatives: Valuation, Calibration and Sensitivity Analysis

Interest Rate Derivatives: Valuation, Calibration and Sensitivity Analysis (Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems) by Ingo Beyna
English | 2013-03-08 | ISBN: 3642349242 | PDF | 220 pages | 3 MB

Interest Rate Derivatives: Valuation, Calibration and Sensitivity Analysis
The class of interest rate models introduced by O. Cheyette in 1994 is a subclass of the general HJM framework with a time dependent volatility parameterization. This book addresses the above mentioned class of interest rate models and concentrates on the calibration, valuation and sensitivity analysis in multifactor models. It derives analytical pricing formulas for bonds and caplets and applies several numerical valuation techniques in the class of Cheyette model, i.e. Monte Carlo simulation, characteristic functions and PDE valuation based on sparse grids. Finally it focuses on the sensitivity analysis of Cheyette models and derives Model- and Market Greeks. To the best of our knowledge, this sensitivity analysis of interest rate derivatives in the class of Cheyette models is unique in the literature. Up to now the valuation of interest rate derivatives using PDEs has been restricted to 3 dimensions only, since the computational effort was too great. The author picks up the sparse grid technique, adjusts it slightly and can solve high-dimensional PDEs (four dimensions plus time) accurately in reasonable time. Many topics investigated in this book are new areas of research and make a significant contribution to the scientific community of financial engineers. They also represent a valuable development for practitioners.
