FREEDownload : A Grammar of Eton

Van de Velde, Mark L.O., "A Grammar of Eton"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 3110204401 | PDF | pages: 457 | 2 mb

A Grammar of Eton
is the first description of the Cameroonian Bantu language Eton. It is also one of the few complete descriptions of a North-western Bantu language. The complex tonology of Eton is carefully analysed and presented in a simple and consistent descriptive framework, which permits the reader to keep track of Eton's many tonal morphemes. Phonologists will be especially interested in the analysis of stem initial prominence, which manifests itself in a number of logically independent phenomena, including length of the onset consonant, phonotactic skewing and number of tonal attachment sites. Typologists and Africanists working on morphosyntax will find useful analyses of, among others, gender and agreement; tense, aspect, mood and negation; and verbal derivation. They will encounter many morphosyntactic differences between Eton and the better known Eastern and Southern Bantu languages, often due to evolutions shaped by maximality constraints on stems. The chapters on clause structure and complex constructions provide data hardly found in sources on the languages of the region, including descriptions of non-verbal clauses, focus, quasi-auxiliaries and adverbial clauses.

FREEDownload : Game Theory: An Introduction

E. N. Barron, "Game Theory: An Introduction"
2008 | ISBN: 0470171324 | 440 pages | PDF | 6 MB

Game Theory: An Introduction
Game theory arises in almost every fact of human and inhuman interaction since oftentimes during these communications objectives are opposed or cooperation is viewed as an option. From economics and finance to biology and computer science, researchers and practitioners are often put in complex decision-making scenarios, whether they are interacting with each other or working with evolving technology and artificial intelligence. Acknowledging the role of mathematics in making logical and advantageous decisions, uses modern software applications to create, analyze, and implement effective decision-making models.

While most books on modern game theory are either too abstract or too applied, this book provides a balanced treatment of the subject that is both conceptual and hands-on. Game Theory introduces readers to the basic theories behind games and presents real-world examples from various fields of study such as economics, political science, military science, finance, biological science as well as general game playing. A unique feature of this book is the use of Maple to find the values and strategies of games, and in addition, it aids in the implementation of algorithms for the solution or visualization of game concepts. Maple is also utilized to facilitate a visual learning environment of game theory and acts as the primary tool for the calculation of complex non-cooperative and cooperative games.

Important game theory topics are presented within the following five main areas of coverage:

– Two-person zero sum matrix games
– Nonzero sum games and the reduction to nonlinear programming
– Cooperative games, including discussion of both the Nucleolus concept and the Shapley value
– Bargaining, including threat strategies
– Evolutionary stable strategies and population games

Although some mathematical competence is assumed, appendices are provided to act as a refresher of the basic concepts of linear algebra, probability, and statistics. Exercises are included at the end of each section along with algorithms for the solution of the games to help readers master the presented information. Also, explicit Maple and Mathematica® commands are included in the book and are available as worksheets via the book's related Web site. The use of this software allows readers to solve many more advanced and interesting games without spending time on the theory of linear and nonlinear programming or performing other complex calculations.

With extensive examples illustrating game theory's wide range of relevance, this classroom-tested book is ideal for game theory courses in mathematics, engineering, operations research, computer science, and economics at the upper-undergraduate level. It is also an ideal companion for anyone who is interested in the applications of game theory.

2003 | 67 Pages | ISBN: 0634033107 | PDF + MP3 | 134 MB

Jazz Piano (Level 5)
The Associated Board responds with Jazz Piano, a comprehensive introduction to the world of jazz. A pioneering set of publications and optional assessment materials provide the building blocks you need to play jazz with imagination, understanding, and style, and to improvise effectively right from the start. Five levels of graded pieces contain a wide range of styles: funky jazz, up-tempo swing, calypso, Latin, jazz waltz, modal, bebop, Gospel, ragtime, free jazz, and more. There are classic tunes by Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk. Within each level there are 15 pieces, aural tests, quick studies, scales, arpeggios, and a CD. The 15 pieces are presented in three categories: blues, standards, and contemporary jazz. Each piece provides a head/melody which contains all the characteristic voicings, phrasing, and rhythmic patterns needed for a stylish performance. An improvised section follows, where guideline pitches and left-hand voicings are given as a practical starting point for solos. Totally accessible and at the highest musical standards, these pieces provide the opportunity to play jazz confidently and creatively.

John De Vries, "Food Safety and Toxicity"
1997 | pages: 334 | ISBN: 0849394880 | PDF | 4,2 mb

Food Safety and Toxicity
examines the many problems and changes in food safety and toxicity. From a natural science viewpoint, this informative book takes on challenging and important topics impacting food researchers, regulators, producers, healthcare providers, educators, and consumers. It is organized into three main sections. Section 1 explores the relationship between the origin or formation of potentially toxic compounds and their eventual ingestion. Section 2 picks up with information on the potential consequences of this ingestion, and Section 3 concludes with the discussion of prevention and minimization of health risks.

By emphasizing food safety, rather than nutritional toxicology, this book puts food hazards and their health risks in true perspective. It also explores the complementary roles of toxicology and epidemiology in studying associations between nutrition and adverse health effects and in assessing toxicological risks from food components in a deliberate manner. , with clear, non-technical language and valuable insight, brings you up-to-date on the significant food safety issues confronting us today.

Macroeconomic Performance in a Globalising Economy by Robert Anderton and Geoff Kenny

English | 2010 | ISBN: 0521116694 | PDF | 298 pages | 2,7 MB

The process of globalisation has been ongoing for centuries, but few would doubt that it has accelerated and intensified in recent decades. This acceleration is evidenced as much by the strong synchronicity in the rapid transmission of financial crises starting in late 2007 as it is by the decade of almost unprecedented growth in international trade and financial market liberalisation that preceded it.

Macroeconomic Performance in a Globalising Economy
This book shows how the international economy has become more connected via increased production, trade, capital flows and financial linkages. Using a variety of methodologies, including both panel econometrics and DSGE modelling, a team of experts from academia, central banks and the IMF examine how this increased globalisation has affected competitiveness, productivity, inflation and the labour market. This timely contribution to the globalisation literature provides a longer-term perspective while also evaluating some of the potential implications for policy makers, particularly from a European perspective.

Eclipsing the usual list of choices, it unambiguously rates and ranks everything from hotels, restaurants, and attractions to rental car companies. With The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas, you know what’s available in every category, from the best to the worst. It is the one guide that will put you in the driver’s seat.

The reader will also find the sections about the history of the town and the chapters on gambling fascinating. Every gambler should be required to read this book cover to cover before they spend a vacation contributing to the casinos all the money that it takes to run all those flashing lights. In truth, The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas emphasizes how to have fun and understand the crazy environment that is today's Vegas. It's a keeper.

Mastering Photoshop CS3 for Print Design and Production
Unlike the early days of Photoshop, for several years now most Photoshop books have been aimed at photographers; there is a big hole on the bookstore shelf that needs to be filled by a Photoshop book that is geared specifically towards graphic design professionals and production artists. This core audience should not have to wade through useless chapters of content geared towards other users of the application, namely professional photographers, web designers, and video editors.

Analytic Projective Geometry (Ems Textbooks in Mathematics) by Eduardo Casas-Alvero
2014 | ISBN: 3037191384 | English | 636 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Projective geometry is concerned with the properties of figures that are invariant by projecting and taking sections. It is considered one of the most beautiful parts of geometry and plays a central role because its specializations cover the whole of the affine, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries. The natural extension of projective geometry is projective algebraic geometry, a rich and active field of research. Regarding its applications, results and techniques of projective geometry are today intensively used in computer vision.

This book contains a comprehensive presentation of projective geometry, over the real and complex number fields, and its applications to affine and Euclidean geometries. It covers central topics such as linear varieties, cross ratio, duality, projective transformations, quadrics and their classifications – projective, affine and metric –, as well as the more advanced and less usual spaces of quadrics, rational normal curves, line complexes and the classifications of collineations, pencils of quadrics and correlations. Two appendices are devoted to the projective foundations of perspective and to the projective models of plane non-Euclidean geometries. The presentation uses modern language, is based on linear algebra and provides complete proofs. Exercises are proposed at the end of each chapter; many of them are beautiful classical results.

The material in this book is suitable for courses on projective geometry for undergraduate students, with a working knowledge of a standard first course on linear algebra. The text is a valuable guide to graduate students and researchers working in areas using or related to projective geometry, such as algebraic geometry and computer vision, and to anyone wishing to gain an advanced view on geometry as a whole.

Fundamentals of Microfluidics and Lab on a Chip for Biological Analysis and Discovery By Paul C.H. Li
2010 | 418 Pages | ISBN: 143981855X | PDF | 194 MB

Fundamentals of Microfluidics and Lab on a Chip for Biological Analysis and Discovery
Lab-on-a-chip technology permits us to make many important discoveries that can only be observed at the microscale or the nanoscale. Using this technology, biological and biochemical analyses translate into greater sensitivity, more accurate results, and more valuable findings. Authored by one of the field's pioneering researchers, Fundamentals of Microfluidics and Lab on a Chip for Biological Analysis and Discovery focuses on all key aspects of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technologies to offer an exceptionally cohesive overview of the science, its limitations, breakthroughs made over the years, and currently emerging advances.

The book emphasizes analytical applications of microfluidic technology and offers in-depth coverage of micromachining methods, microfluidic operations, chemical separations, sample preparation and injection methods, detection technology, and various chemical and biological analyses. Other topics of interest include the use of polymeric chips, fluid flow valve and control, single-cell analysis, DNA and RNA amplification techniques, DNA hybridization, immunoassays, and enzymatic assays.

The book includes more than 300 figures that depict novel chip functions and breakthroughs and 16 tables summarize materials and refer readers to additional resources. An appendix compiles extensive analytical applications from emerging and established research groups.

Beginners in the field will find the book useful for navigating the vast literature related to the technology, while experienced researchers will rely on the compiled information for easy comparison and references for further study.

Derived from the highly popular Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip for Chemical and Biological Analysis and Discovery (2006), this volume is also readily adaptable for classroom use. Problem sets in each chapter help students test their assimilation of the material and clarify challenging concepts. The book contains a comprehensive glossary, a complete index, and extensive references. A solutions manual is available with qualifying course adoption.

Bea vita! Crudo Nordest di Romolo Bugaro
Laterza | 2010 | ISBN: 8842090840 | 99 pages | EPUB | 3 MB

Klaus-Michael Mallmann, Martin Cuppers, "Nazi Palestine: The Plans for the Extermination of the Jews in Palestine"
2010 | ISBN-10: 1929631936 | 272 pages | PDF | 4 MB

Nazi Palestine: The Plans for the Extermination of the Jews in Palestine
"It is to the credit of the two authors of this book . . . that they have been assiduous in locating information either inaccessible or overlooked earlier."-Gerhard L. Weinberg

The planned extermination of the Jews living in Palestine was only weeks away . . .

In 1941-42 Nazi Germany appeared to be invincible in North Africa, and many Arab nationalists looked to a leader, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin el-Husseini, for guidance.

The Mufti had several meetings with Adolf Hitler. Nazi Germany also pledged to wipe out the Jews who had been living in Palestine since time immemorial as well as the new arrivals from the beginning of the Zionist movement in the nineteenth century and following the Balfour Declaration in 1917.

A special unit was assembled and trained in Greece in the spring of 1942 by SD officer Walter Rauff, the originator of the gassing van experiments in Poland and the Soviet Union. They were to operate behind the lines with the help of those in the region who were eager to join the task force. After El Alamein, the Einsatzkommando shifted its operations to Tunisia, where it implemented cruel anti-Jewish policies for many months.

Over 2,500 Tunisian Jews were to die in the camps set up by the Nazis and their collaborators.

The authors have identified the relevant documents and analyzed the racist, ideological, political, and religious implications of the planning of a specific regional extermination program within the context of the Holocaust.

Osprey Publishing | 2005 | ISBN: 1841768324 | English | 66 Pages | PDF (e-book) | 9 MB

When the Romans first fought against Caledonii during the reign of Agricola (AD 77-84), Agricola established a frontier along the Gask Ridge. He also consolidated the Forth-Clyde isthmus, the location at which the Romans would later build the Antonine Wall from AD 138 to 143. The following 100 years saw a cycle of advance into and retreat from Scotland, until the Romans abandoned the Antonine Wall completely. This book examines the Flavian, Antonine and Severan conquests of Scotland and the fortifications along Rome's northern frontier, and it explores the archaeological remains and places them in historical context.

The Oxford Handbook of Sound and Image in Digital Media by Carol Vernallis, Amy Herzog and John Richardson
English | 2013 | ISBN: 019975764X | 832 pages | PDF | 9,4 MB
The Oxford Handbook of Sound and Image in Digital Media surveys the contemporary landscape of audiovisual media. Contributors to the volume look not only to changes brought by digital innovations, but to the complex social and technological past that informs, and is transformed by, new media.

The Oxford Handbook of Sound and Image in Digital Media
This collection is conceived as a series of dialogues and inquiries by leading scholars from both image- and sound-based disciplines. Chapters explore the history and the future of moving-image media across a range of formats including blockbuster films, video games, music videos, social media, digital visualization technologies, experimental film, documentaries, video art, pornography, immersive theater, and electronic music. Sound, music, and noise emerge within these studies as integral forces within shifting networks of representation.

The essays in this collection span a range of disciplinary approaches (film studies, musicology, philosophy, cultural studies, the digital humanities) and subjects of study (Iranian documentaries, the Twilight franchise, military combat footage, and Lady Gaga videos). Thematic sections and direct exchanges among authors facilitate further engagement with the debates invoked by the text.

This concise and practical guide describes infections in geographical areas and provides information on disease risk, concomitant infections (such as co-prevalence of HIV and tuberculosis) and emerging bacterial, viral and parasitic infections in a given geographical area of the world.

Infectious Diseases: A Geographic Guide
Infectious Diseases: A Geographic Guide is divided according to United Nations world regions and addresses geographic disease profiles, presenting symptoms and incubation periods of infections. Each chapter contains a section on the coverage of the childhood vaccination programs in the countries included in that region. Chapters also include descriptions of infectious disease risk and problems with resistant bacteria in each region (e.g. antibiotic resistance in Salmonella infections in Southeast Asia).

For the clinician, this book is a tool to generate differential diagnoses by considering the geographical history, as well the presenting symptoms and duration of illness. For the travel medicine specialist, this book provides information on risks of different diseases at various destinations and is particularly useful in advising long-term travelers.

FREEDownload : Trauma: A Social Theory

Trauma: A Social Theory by Jeffrey C. Alexander
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0745649114 , 0745649122 | 180 pages | PDF | 1 MB
In this book Jeffrey C. Alexander develops an original social theory of trauma and uses it to carry out a series of empirical investigations into social suffering around the globe.

Trauma: A Social Theory
Alexander argues that traumas are not merely psychological but collective experiences, and that trauma work plays a key role in defining the origins and outcomes of critical social conflicts. He outlines a model of trauma work that relates interests of carrier groups, competing narrative identifications of victim and perpetrator, utopian and dystopian proposals for trauma resolution, the performative power of constructed events, and the distribution of organizational resources.

Alexander explores these processes in richly textured case studies of cultural-trauma origins and effects, from the universalism of the Holocaust to the particularism of the Israeli right, from postcolonial battles over the Partition of India and Pakistan to the invisibility of the Rape of Nanjing in Maoist China. In a particularly controversial chapter, Alexander describes the idealizing discourse of globalization as a trauma-response to the Cold War.

Contemporary societies have often been described as more concerned with the past than the future, more with tragedy than progress. In Trauma: A Social Theory, Alexander explains why.
