Soft Target Hardening: Protecting People from Attack
Terrorist attacks occur daily and are increasingly being aimed at civilian populations around the world. Battlefield lines have been redrawn to include churches, schools, hospitals, and malls. This breach of moral boundary is shocking and invokes fear-two primary goals of terrorism.
Although there is an increase in soft target activity-or attacks on places of worship, study, and leisure-there is hesitation to explore such susceptibility in the United States. starts the national dialogue by providing case studies, best practices, and methodologies for identifying soft target vulnerabilities and reducing risk in the US. Offering deterrence and mitigation techniques from more than 275 sources, this comprehensive book:

Explores US cultural nuances contributing to the country turning a psychological blind eye toward soft target threats
Assesses the attractiveness of soft target threats presented by foreign and domestic terror groups and drug trafficking organizations
Analyzes the unique vulnerabilities of churches, schools, hospitals, malls, sporting and recreational events, and other soft targets
Gives an overview of soft target hardening tactics from global hotspots, including first-person accounts and photographs
Introduces the concept of effects-based hardening, derived from the military model of effects-based operations
Discusses emerging soft target challenges such as insider threats, kidnapping, and use of human shields
Evaluates the likelihood of the use of weapons of mass destruction against civilian-centric venues
is a must read for those who secure, own, and operate soft target facilities, and for citizens who want to protect themselves and their families from attack.

Understanding Immunology, 3rd Edition (Cell and Molecular Biology in Action) by Peter Wood
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0273730681 | 392 pages | PDF | 21,4 MB

Understanding Immunology, 3rd Edition
Understanding Immunology is a well-established introduction to this complex subject for readers with no previous exposure. It is aimed primarily at undergraduates in biological sciences, biomedical sciences and medicine. The selection and order of topic coverage is designed to instruct effectively, and a variety of boxed examples add depth and historical context for those readers wanting to go beyond the essentials. The first part of the book (Chapters 1 to 11) takes students through the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and describes the molecules, cells and tissues of the immune system that provide protection against a wide variety of pathogens. It also describes how mankind has utilised the immune system, from the development of vaccines to the production of reagents for use in the clinic and laboratory. The final four chapters describe how the immune system operates in disease situations such as allergy, autoimmunity and transplantation. This third edition is revised to cover the latest experimental and clinical changes in the subject, particularly those in the development of lymphocytes; the different types of CD4 helper T cells; the use of antibodies, including monoclonal antibodies, as experimental and clinical tools; and immunological tolerance. Dr. Peter Wood is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Manchester. He has over 20 years of teaching experience, both in the UK and in the USA, and is widely published in the literature. His current research interest is the role of cytokines in the development of diabetes.

Cable Confidence: A Guide to Textured Knitting by Sara Louise Harper
Think cables are too tricky to master? Debunk that myth today! Cabling is just a series of knits and purls. If you can knit and purl, you already have the foundation for making
gorgeous textured sweaters. A new knitting world will open up as soon as you learn the basics.

– Unlock the mysteries of reading stitch charts, using cable needles, swatching, and much more with this beginner friendly guide

– Start with the easiest stitches, and then move on to more complex techniques, one step at a time

– Knit up starter projects like pillows, scarves, and an afghan, and then move on to gorgeous pullovers and cardigans 14 projects in all

There are 5 very nice aran sweaters all classic mode which usually means drop down shoulders. What is interesting to me is the beauty of the aran combinations which is not so easy to design and with a pullover you do have more scope to do just that. For example, I find the cover sweater to be very aesthetically pleasing. The final sweater in the book, Ciaran pullover, is another stunning aran with a beautiful central cable pattern set off by mirrored cables on the sides. The Fiona vest uses an allover cable plus zipper. The first two sweaters are aimed for beginners with simpler cables. There are 9 pullovers, one v-neck cardigan, one cardigan vest, 3 pillows, one scarf, one felted bag and one hat. Photos in color are good as are the charts and schematics. Sizes go from finished chest of 36" to 54" in some examples. Most yarns called for are worsted weight or #4 on the yarn system. All the sleeves are done drop down which was the standard method until about a year ago and this book was probably begun a few years back. The sleeves don't look very good on the models as they are longer than the models' arms and also appear to be too wide. Certainly the more advanced knitter can change the sleeves to fit more attractively. For anyone interested in aran and cabled sweaters, this is an excellent choice.

Have you ever looked at a requirement document that's 50 plus pages long and wondered if there was an easier way to communicate? Or have you ever received a 1 liner story without any context and thought "huh?".

Growing Agile: A Coach’s Guide to Agile Requirements (Growing Agile: A Coach’s Guide Series Book 3)
We have and in our years of work in traditional waterfall organisations and newer agile organisations the trend continues. Very seldom is the sweet spot in the middle achieved. In every single case the path to the sweet spot started with conversations.

Over the last 3 years we have developed a number of workshops to help people start these conversation. The workshops are aimed at different stakeholders ranging from business people, to Product Owners and teams. This book is a collection of some of those workshops and can be used to help improve the way you think about and communicate agile requirements.

Although we talk about Product Owners, this book isn't just for Scrum teams. You can apply most of the lessons in here to any project you are on. We have used these techniques and ideas for renovating houses, redesigning websites and even writing this book!

Wave Motion By J. Billingham, A. C. King
2006 | 476 Pages | ISBN: 0521632579 , 0521634504 | PDF | 12 MB

Wave Motion
Waves are a ubiquitous and important feature of the physical world, and throughout history it has been a major challenge to understand them. They can propagate on the surfaces of solids and of fluids; chemical waves control the beating of your heart; traffic jams move in waves down lanes crowded with vehicles. This introduction to the mathematics of wave phenomena is aimed at advanced undergraduate courses on waves for mathematicians, physicists or engineers. Some more advanced material on both linear and nonlinear waves is also included, thus making the book suitable for beginning graduate courses. The authors assume some familiarity with partial differential equations, integral transforms and asymptotic expansions as well as an acquaintance with fluid mechanics, elasticity and electromagnetism. The context and physics that underlie the mathematics is clearly explained at the beginning of each chapter. Worked examples and exercises are supplied throughout, with solutions available to teachers.

Published: 2009-10-28 | ISBN: 1441901752 | PDF | 464 pages | 12 MB

Data Engineering: Mining, Information and Intelligence
DATA ENGINEERING: Mining, Information, and Intelligence describes applied research aimed at the task of collecting data and distilling useful information from that data. Most of the work presented emanates from research completed through collaborations between Acxiom Corporation and its academic research partners under the aegis of the Acxiom Laboratory for Applied Research (ALAR). Chapters are roughly ordered to follow the logical sequence of the transformation of data from raw input data streams to refined information. Four discrete sections cover Data Integration and Information Quality; Grid Computing; Data Mining; and Visualization. Additionally, there are exercises at the end of each chapter. The primary audience for this book is the broad base of anyone interested in data engineering, whether from academia, market research firms, or business-intelligence companies. The volume is ideally suited for researchers, practitioners, and postgraduate students alike. With its focus on problems arising from industry rather than a basic research perspective, combined with its intelligent organization, extensive references, and subject and author indices, it can serve the academic, research, and industrial audiences.

Expert Oracle SQL: Optimization, Deployment, and Statistics EPUB
is about optimizing individual SQL statements, especially on production database systems. This Oracle-specific book begins by assuming you have already identified a particular SQL statement and are considering taking steps to improve its performance. The book describes a systematic process by which to diagnose a problem statement, identify a fix, and to implement that fix safely in a production system. You'll learn not only to improve performance when it is too slow, but also to stabilize performance when it is too variable. You'll learn about system statistics and how the Cost-Based Optimizer uses them to determine a suitable execution plan for a given statement. That knowledge provides the foundation from which to identify the root cause, and to stabilize and improve performance. Next after identifying a problem and the underlying root cause is to put in place a solution. explains how to apply various remedies such as changing the SQL statement, adding hints, changing the physical design, and more, and how they can be brought to bear on fixing a problem once and for all. Rolling a change out smoothly is an important topic when dealing with tuning and optimization. does not let you down in this critical area. The book contains two chapters of good information from an experienced professional on how to safely deploy changes into production so that your systems remaining running and available throughout the deployment process. Describes a systematic approach to tuning Oracle SQL Explains how things are supposed to work, what can go wrong, and how to fix it Takes you through the steps needed to stabilize performance in your production systems What you'll learn Determine the root cause of poor performance in a SQL statement Decipher each line of an execution plan and how it relates to its source SQL statement Know the various options and transformations available for the Cost-Based Optimizer Interpret the diagnostic data from Active Session History, SQL Performance Monitor, and from other sources Apply optimizer hints, SQL profiles, and SQL baselines when they are best used, and avoid them otherwise Manage object statistics used by the optimizer to ensure efficient execution plans Who this book is for is aimed at Oracle Database administrators who are interested in performance troubleshooting.
