Music and Science in the Age of Galileo (The Western Ontario Series in Philosophy of Science) by V. Coelho
English | Jan 5, 2011 | ISBN: 9048142180 | 252 Pages | PDF | 7 MB
Music and Science in the Age of Galileo features twelve new essays by leading specialists in the fields of musicology, history of science, astronomy, philosophy, and instrument building that explore the relations between music and the scientific culture of Galileo's time. The essays take a broad historical approach towards understanding such topics as the role of music in Galileo's experiments and in the scientific revolution, the musical formation of scientists, Galileo's impact on the art and music of his time, the scientific knowledge of instrument builders, and the scientific experiments and cultural context of Galileo's father, Vincenzo Galilei.

Music and Science in the Age of Galileo
This volume opens up new areas in both musicology and the history of science, and twists together various strands of parallel work by musicians and scientists on Galileo and his time.
This book will be of interest to musicologists, historians of science and those interested in interdisciplinary perspectives of the late Renaissance — early Baroque. For its variety of approaches, it will be a valuable collection of readings for graduate students, and those seeking a more integrated approach to historical problems.
The book will be of interest to historians of science, philosophers, musicologists, astronomers, and mathematicians.

Physics and Astrophysics of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays

Physics and Astrophysics of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays
English | Astrophysics| 14. December 2001 | ISBN-10: 3540428992 | 328 pages | Djvu | 2.2 mb
The International School on Physics and Astrophysics of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR2000) was held at the Observatoire de Paris-Meudon on June 26-29, 2000.

Physics and Astrophysics of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays
This was the first international school speci?cally dedicated to ultra high energy cosmic rays. Its aim was to familiarize with and attract students, physicists and astronomers into this quickly developing newresearch ?eld. The mysterious and currently unknown origin of the most energetic par- cles observed in Nature has triggered in recent years theoretical speculations ranging from electromagnetic acceleration to as yet undiscovered physics – yond the Standard Model. It has also lead to the development of several new detection concepts and experimental projects, some of which are currently – der construction. By its nature, the ?eld of ultra high energy cosmic rays is therefore highly interdisciplinary and borrows from astrophysics and cosmology, via particle physics, to experimental physics and observational astronomy. One main aspect of the school was to emphasize and take advantage of this interd- ciplinarity. The lectures were grouped into subtopics and are reproduced in this volume in the following order: After a general introductory lecture on cosmic rays follow two contributions on experimental detection techniques, followed by three lectures on acceleration in astrophysical objects. The next four contri- tions cover all major aspects of propagation and interactions of ultra high energy radiation, including speculative issues such as newinteractions.

2014 | ISBN-10: 1486300758 | 344 pages | PDF | 34 MB

Mt. Stromlo Observatory: From Bush Observatory to the Nobel Prize
This book tells the story of the Mt. Stromlo Observatory in Canberra which began life as a government department, later becoming an optical munitions factory producing gun sights and telescopes during the Second World War, before changing its focus to astrophysics – the new astronomy.

In the ensuing years programs were introduced to push the Observatory in new directions at the international frontiers of astronomy. The astronomers built new, better and larger telescopes to unravel the secrets of the universe. There were controversies, exciting new discoveries and new explanations of phenomena that had been discovered. The Observatory and its researchers have contributed to determining how old the universe is, participated in the largest survey of galaxies in the universe, and helped to show us that the universal expansion is accelerating – research that led to Brian Schmidt and his international team being awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize for physics.

These and other major discoveries are detailed in this fascinating book about one of the great observatories in the world.

Key Features:
* Mt Stromlo is an important part of the history of Canberra, an Australian icon, and one of the great observatories of the world
* Written by eminent members of the Mt. Stromlo Observatory team
* Released to coincide with Canberra's centenary celebrations
* Illustrated with historical documents and wonderful and exciting images of the universe we live in
* Includes Brian Schmidt's Nobel lecture

This book assembles for the first time in a single text the full range of astronomical and engineering principles used in the design and construction of large telescopes. It aims to cover all aspects of the field, from the fundamentals of astronomical observation to optics, control systems, and structural, mechanical, and thermal engineering, as well as such specialized topics as site selection and program management. The book is the result of the collaboration of many leading astronomers, engineers, and project managers. Their contributions have been edited to provide a consistent approach and treatment: for example, ground- and space-based telescopes are treated from a common perspective.
