Wellington’s Highlanders (Men-at-Arms Series 253)
Ultimately, regiments are judged by their behaviour in battle; and highlanders have always had a reputation as 'stormers', as exemplified by the impetuous charge of the Gordons at Waterloo, intermingled with the Scots greys. This reputation probably resulted at least in part from an unusually close bonding between officers and men, and an assumption that highlanders were natural soldiers, possessed of an impetuous spirit and temperamentally more inclined to use the bayonet. Complemented by many illustrations, including eight full page colour plates by Bryan Fosten, Stuart Reid's engaging text examines the uniforms and organisation of Wellington's Highlanders.

Sabotage: America’s Enemies Within the CIA

Sabotage: America's Enemies Within the CIA By Rowan Scarborough
2007 | 229 Pages | ISBN: 1596985100 | PDF | 3 MB

Sabotage: America’s Enemies Within the CIA
How Bush-hating CIA Bureaucrats Are Sabotaging the War on Terror Since the attacks on September 11, 2001, intelligence collection has become the number-one weapon in the effort to defeat al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. A Description penetrated is an attack stopped. And to the outside observer, the CIA has performed well as a key partner in the Bush administration's War on Terror. But as Rowan Scarborough reveals in this groundbreaking new book, significant elements within the CIA are undermining both the president and national security through leaks, false allegations, and outright sabotage. Using his first-rate sources in all levels of national security–from field officers to high-ranking analysts to former intelligence heads–Scarborough paints a disturbing picture of partisan politics endangering the success of our campaigns abroad and the very lives of our soldiers and agents. In Sabotage, you'll learn: * How CIA analysts repeatedly leak details about classified intelligence programs with the dual intent of ending them and damaging the president * How, on at least eight occasions, intelligence officials have made serious allegations of wrongdoing against the president's men–which turned out to be false * Why, contrary to popular belief, the CIA has become predominantly liberal * How a CIA turf battle prevented special operators from pursuing and capturing a notorious Taliban leader * How current and former CIA officers fueled conspiracy theories that President Bush orchestrated the 9/11 attacks on America * How a CIA leak to the New York Times deprived the U.S. of critical information in the War on Terror * How press leaks by the CIA have damaged relations with our foreign allies in the War on Terror * How a CIA analyst worked with Democrats to sabotage the nomination of John Bolton to the UN * How Clinton's downsizing of the CIA led to the closing of stations in scores of jihadist breeding grounds–including Hamburg, Germany, where the 9/11 Description was hatched The CIA's job is to collect facts and let the White House, the Pentagon, and the State Department make national security policy. But, as Scarborough conclusively demonstrates, an agency that is supposed to be scrupulously nonpartisan has become increasingly political–during a time of war–against America's elected commander in chief.

Battle on the Aisne 1914: The BEF and the Birth of the Western Front
The river Aisne featured prominently in August 1914 during the Retreat from Mons and in September was the scene of bitter fighting when the BEF re-crossed it in their unsuccessful attempt to dislodge the German Army entrenched along the Northern Crest. The fighting was hugely costly to the BEF, which had already fought three major engagements and marched over 200 miles in a month. The three British Corps lost over 700 officers and some 15,000 men. Little wonder one officer wrote that he felt he was 'in the company of ghosts'.Historian Jerry Murland places the Aisne battles in their context, both from the BEF and German viewpoints. He highlights the early deficiencies and unpreparedness of the British Army staff and logistics organization as well as friction among the command structure, all of which hampered effective operations.

Saunders and Saro Aircraft Since 1917

Peter London – Saunders and Saro Aircraft Since 1917
Putnam | 1988 | ISBN: 0851778143 | English | 359 pages | PDF | 148.31 MB

Saunders and Saro Aircraft Since 1917
Saunders/Saro designed and built mostly flying-boats and amphibious aircraft, a natural evolution from an earlier involvement with boatbuilding. The aircraft varied greatly in terms of success. A number have gone largely unrecorded, especially some of the early prototypes. A small number of landplane designs were also conceived. The term 'Saunders/Saro' is used to describe a Limited Company which existed between 1908 and 1959. For twenty years, S.E. Saunders Ltd was engaged in boat-building, sub-contracted aircraft construction, and the development of a few aircraft to the company's own designs. In late 1928 the firm was reorganised and a new name was adopted-Saunders-Roe Ltd, usually abbreviated to Saro. The latter concern laid greater emphasis on aircraft design, and other interests were over a period made virtually autonomous.
Despite fluctuations in the success of its aircraft, the company continued with its work and by the early 1950s was the last stronghold of flying-boat development in Great Britain. Saunders/Saro was always a small enterprise compared with the major aircraft manufacturers and so a frequently one-sided battle was waged in terms of obtaining orders and developing new types. It has been suggested that the company might have done well to concentrate solely on boat-building. Certainly a significant proportion of its aircraft remained unsold or were unpopular with those who flew them. Others, however, were more successful and a few were outstanding. This is the story of all these aircraft and the company which produced them.
