Sergey Edward Lyshevski, Cristian I Contescu, "Dekker Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2nd Edition (6 Volume Set)"
2008 | ISBN-10: 0849396395 | 5912 pages | PDF | 158 MB

Dekker Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2nd Edition (6 Volume Set)
With its original publication, the Dekker Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology immediately became the reference against which all other nano references are measured. Noting that the encyclopedia was being assembled by leading authorities at an early stage in the field's development, Sir Harry Kroto, 1996 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, rightfully predicted that the encyclopedia would bring together key advances in a "coherently organized framework." Continuing to cover the field as no other resource, the six-volume second edition crosses disciplines to examine fundamental nano principles, theories, and methodologies, as well as the latest information on nano-relevant properties. It also covers advances in nanoscale engineering, newly developed simulation tools, and emerging computational methods.

Among other accolades, this million-dollar bestseller has gone on to win an Outstanding Academic Book Award from CHOICE magazine.

Soft Target Hardening: Protecting People from Attack

Soft Target Hardening: Protecting People from Attack by Jennifer Hesterman
2014 | ISBN: 1482244217 | English | 321 pages | PDF | 17 MB

Soft Target Hardening: Protecting People from Attack
Terrorist attacks occur daily and are increasingly being aimed at civilian populations around the world. Battlefield lines have been redrawn to include churches, schools, hospitals, and malls. This breach of moral boundary is shocking and invokes fear-two primary goals of terrorism.
Although there is an increase in soft target activity-or attacks on places of worship, study, and leisure-there is hesitation to explore such susceptibility in the United States. starts the national dialogue by providing case studies, best practices, and methodologies for identifying soft target vulnerabilities and reducing risk in the US. Offering deterrence and mitigation techniques from more than 275 sources, this comprehensive book:

Explores US cultural nuances contributing to the country turning a psychological blind eye toward soft target threats
Assesses the attractiveness of soft target threats presented by foreign and domestic terror groups and drug trafficking organizations
Analyzes the unique vulnerabilities of churches, schools, hospitals, malls, sporting and recreational events, and other soft targets
Gives an overview of soft target hardening tactics from global hotspots, including first-person accounts and photographs
Introduces the concept of effects-based hardening, derived from the military model of effects-based operations
Discusses emerging soft target challenges such as insider threats, kidnapping, and use of human shields
Evaluates the likelihood of the use of weapons of mass destruction against civilian-centric venues
is a must read for those who secure, own, and operate soft target facilities, and for citizens who want to protect themselves and their families from attack.

Play Matters

FREEDownload : Play Matters

Play Matters (Playful Thinking series) by Miguel Sicart
2014 | ISBN: 0262027925 | English | 176 pages | PDF | 7 MB

Play Matters
What do we think about when we think about play? A pastime? Games? Childish activities? The opposite of work? Think again: If we are happy and well rested, we may approach even our daily tasks in a playful way, taking the attitude of play without the activity of play. So what, then, is play? In , Miguel Sicart argues that to play is to be in the world; playing is a form of understanding what surrounds us and a way of engaging with others. Play goes beyond games; it is a mode of being human. We play games, but we also play with toys, on playgrounds, with technologies and design. Sicart proposes a theory of play that doesn't derive from a particular object or activity but is a portable tool for being–not tied to objects but brought by people to the complex interactions that form their daily lives. It is not separated from reality; it is part of it. It is pleasurable, but not necessarily fun. Play can be dangerous, addictive, and destructive. Along the way, Sicart considers playfulness, the capacity to use play outside the context of play; toys, the materialization of play — instruments but also play pals; playgrounds, play spaces that enable all kinds of play; beauty, the aesthetics of play through action; political play — from Maradona's goal against England in the 1986 World Cup to the hactivist activities of Anonymous; the political, aesthetic, and moral activity of game design; and why play and computers get along so well.

Computational Sensor Networks

FREEDownload : Computational Sensor Networks

Thomas C. Henderson, "Computational Sensor Networks"
2009 | pages: 228 | ISBN: 0387096426 | PDF | 8,5 mb

Computational Sensor Networks
A model-based approach to the design and implementation of (CSNs) is proposed. This high-level paradigm for the development and application of sensor device networks provides a strong scientific computing foundation, as well as the basis for robust software engineering practice. The three major components of this approach include (1) models of phenomena to be monitored, (2) models of sensors and actuators, and (3) models of the sensor network computation. We propose guiding principles to identify the state or structure of the phenomenon being sensed, or of the sensor network itself. This is called computational modeling. These methods are then incorporated into the operational system of the sensor network and adapted to system performance requirements to produce a mapping of the computation onto the system architecture. This is called real-time computational mapping and allows modification of system parameters according to real-time performance measures. This book deals with the development of a mathematical and modular software development framework to achieve computational sensor networks.
