Making Space: How the Brain Knows Where Things Are
Knowing where things are seems effortless. Yet our brains devote tremendous computational power to figuring out the simplest details about spatial relationships. Going to the grocery store or finding our cell phone requires sleuthing and coordination across different sensory and motor domains. Making Space" traces this mental detective work to explain how the brain creates our sense of location. But it goes further, to make the case that spatial processing permeates all our cognitive abilities, and that the brain s systems for thinking about space may be the systems of thought itself. Our senses measure energy in the form of light, sound, and pressure on the skin, and our brains evaluate these measurements to make inferences about objects and boundaries. Jennifer Groh describes how eyes detect electromagnetic radiation, how the brain can locate sounds by measuring differences of less than one one-thousandth of a second in how long they take to reach each ear, and how the ear s balance organs help us monitor body posture and movement. The brain synthesizes all this neural information so that we can navigate three-dimensional space. But the brain s work doesn t end there. Spatial representations do double duty in aiding memory and reasoning. This is why it is harder to remember how to get somewhere if someone else is driving, and why, if we set out to do something and forget what it was, returning to the place we started can jog our memory. In making space the brain uses powers we did not know we have."

Bioarchaeology and Behavior: The People of the Ancient Near East

Bioarchaeology and Behavior: The People of the Ancient Near East by Megan A. Perry
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0813042291 | 212 pages | PDF | 4 MB

Bioarchaeology and Behavior: The People of the Ancient Near East
While mortuary ruins have long fascinated archaeologists and art historians interested in the cultures of the Near East and eastern Mediterranean, the human skeletal remains contained in the tombs of this region have garnered less attention. In Bioarchaeology and Behavior, Megan Perry presents a collection of essays that aim a spotlight on the investigation of the ancient inhabitants of the circum-Mediterranean area.

Composed of eight diverse papers, this volume synthesizes recent research on human skeletal remains and their archaeological and historical contexts in this region. Utilizing an environmental, social, and political framework, the contributors present scholarly case studies on such topics as the region's mortuary archaeology, genetic investigations of migration patterns, and the ancient populations' health, disease, and diet. Other key anthropological issues addressed in this volume include the effects of the domestication of plants and animals, the rise of state-level formations, and the role of religion in society. Ultimately, this collection will provide anthropologists, archaeologists, and bioarchaeologists with an important foundation for future research in the Near East and eastern Mediterranean.

2014 | ISBN: 1482244217 | English | 321 pages | PDF | 17 MB

Soft Target Hardening: Protecting People from Attack
Terrorist attacks occur daily and are increasingly being aimed at civilian populations around the world. Battlefield lines have been redrawn to include churches, schools, hospitals, and malls. This breach of moral boundary is shocking and invokes fear-two primary goals of terrorism.
Although there is an increase in soft target activity-or attacks on places of worship, study, and leisure-there is hesitation to explore such susceptibility in the United States. starts the national dialogue by providing case studies, best practices, and methodologies for identifying soft target vulnerabilities and reducing risk in the US. Offering deterrence and mitigation techniques from more than 275 sources, this comprehensive book:

Explores US cultural nuances contributing to the country turning a psychological blind eye toward soft target threats
Assesses the attractiveness of soft target threats presented by foreign and domestic terror groups and drug trafficking organizations
Analyzes the unique vulnerabilities of churches, schools, hospitals, malls, sporting and recreational events, and other soft targets
Gives an overview of soft target hardening tactics from global hotspots, including first-person accounts and photographs
Introduces the concept of effects-based hardening, derived from the military model of effects-based operations
Discusses emerging soft target challenges such as insider threats, kidnapping, and use of human shields
Evaluates the likelihood of the use of weapons of mass destruction against civilian-centric venues
is a must read for those who secure, own, and operate soft target facilities, and for citizens who want to protect themselves and their families from attack.

Risk and Social Theory in Environmental Management

FREEDownload : Risk and Social Theory in Environmental Management

Risk and Social Theory in Environmental Management by Thomas Measham, Stewart Lockie
2012 | ISBN: 0643104127 | English | 232 pages | PDF | 12 MB

Risk and Social Theory in Environmental Management
marks a timely contribution, given that environmental management is no longer just about protecting pristine ecosystems and endangered species from anthropogenic harm; it is about calculating and managing the risks to human communities of rapid environmental and technological change.

First, the book provides a solid foundation of the social theory underpinning the nature of risk, then presents a rethinking of key concepts and methods in order to take more seriously the biophysical embeddedness of human society. Second, it presents a rich set of case studies from Australia and around the world, drawing on the latest applied research conducted by leading research institutions. In so doing, the book identifies the tensions that arise from decision making over risk and uncertainty in a contested policy environment, and provides crucial insights for addressing on-the-ground problems in an integrated way.

* First volume to address environmental risk from a social science perspective
* Latest theoretical developments
* In depth case studies of contemporary issues (e.g. climate change, water shortages)

Federal Crop Insurance

FREEDownload : Federal Crop Insurance

Federal Crop Insurance By Tristan E Bonner
2015 | 118 Pages | ISBN: 1634636880 | PDF | 2 MB

Federal Crop Insurance
The federal crop insurance program began in 1938 when Congress authorized the Corporation. The current program, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency (RMA), provides producers with risk management tools to address crop yield and/or revenue losses for about 130 crops. The federal farm safety net also includes the farm commodity support programs, which provide price and income support for a much narrower list of "covered and loan commodities" such as corn, wheat, rice, and peanuts. In purchasing a crop insurance policy, a producer growing an insurable crop selects a level of coverage and pays a portion of the premium-or none of it in the case of catastrophic coverage- which increases as the level of coverage rises. The federal government pays the rest of the premium. This book provides a primer on the federal crop insurance program and briefly summarizes changes to the program by the 2014 farm bill.

Tales of Gotham, Historical Archaeology, Ethnohistory and Microhistory of New York City

FREEDownload : Tales of Gotham, Historical Archaeology, Ethnohistory and Microhistory of New York City

Tales of Gotham, Historical Archaeology, Ethnohistory and Microhistory of New York City by Meta F. Janowitz and Diane Dallal
English | ISBN: 1461452716 | 2013 | PDF | 389 pages | 10 MB

Tales of Gotham, Historical Archaeology, Ethnohistory and Microhistory of New York City
Historical Archaeology of New York City is a collection of narratives about people who lived in New York City during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, people whose lives archaeologists have encountered during excavations at sites where these people lived or worked. The stories are ethnohistorical or microhistorical studies created using archaeological and documentary data. As microhistories, they are concerned with particular people living at particular times in the past within the framework of world events. The world events framework will be provided in short introductions to chapters grouped by time periods and themes. The foreword by Mary Beaudry and the afterword by LuAnne DeCunzo bookend the individual case studies and add theoretical weight to the volume. Historical Archaeology of New York City focuses on specific individual life stories, or stories of groups of people, as a way to present archaeological theory and research. Archaeologists work with material culture-artifacts-to recreate daily lives and study how culture works; this book is an example of how to do this in a way that can attract people interested in history as well as in anthropological theory.

Grammaticalization: Current views and issues (Studies in Language Companion Series)

FREEDownload : Grammaticalization: Current views and issues (Studies in Language Companion Series)

Grammaticalization: Current views and issues (Studies in Language Companion Series) By Katerina Stathi, Elke Gehweiler, Ekkehard Konig
2010 | 387 Pages | ISBN: 9027205868 | PDF | 3 MB

Grammaticalization: Current views and issues (Studies in Language Companion Series)
This volume contains a selection of papers on grammaticalization from a broad perspective. Some of the papers focus on basic concepts in grammaticalization research such as the concept of 'grammar' as the endpoint of grammaticalization processes, erosion, (uni)directionality, the relation between grammaticalization and constructions, subjectification, and the relation between grammaticalization and analogy. Other papers shed a critical light on grammaticalization as an explanatory parameter in language change. New case studies of micro-processes of grammaticalization complete the selection. The empirical evidence for (and against) grammaticalization comes from diverse domains: subject control, clitics, reciprocal markers, pronouns and agreement markers, gender markers, auxiliaries, aspectual categories, intensifying adjectives and determiners, and pragmatic markers. The languages covered include English and its varieties, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, French, Slavonic languages, and Turkish. The book will be valuable to scholars working on grammaticalization and language change as well as to those interested in individual languages.
