Integrated Management of Diseases Caused by Fungi, Phytoplasma and Bacteria by Aurelio Ciancio and K.G. Mukerji
English | 2008-09-11 | ISBN: 1402085702 | PDF | 422 pages | 10 MB

Integrated Management of Diseases Caused by Fungi, Phytoplasma and Bacteria
The third volume of the series covers, in three Sections, emerging issues in the integrated management of main diseases of perennial and annual crops. The chapters provide basic data about the diseases concerned, in order to facilitate their detection and recognition either by field and laboratory inspection, discussing the main management possibilities experienced by farmers, plant pathologists and consultants, in different areas of the world. The first Section covers key diseases of stone fruit and apple trees, as well as the phytoplasma diseases of grapevine and fruit crops, the citrus diseases caused by Phytophthora spp., and the management of chestnut diseases, esca complex on grapevine and Rosellinia necatrix root rot. In the second Section, on annual crops, a first chapter describes the use of simulation models for potato late blight management, followed by a review about the potentials of the decision support systems approach, with an example of integrated forecasting system for Phytophthora infestans on potato. Following chapters review the management of bacterial fruit-blotch on cucurbits, Verticillium wilt on tomato, Sclerotinia rot on carrot, and cotton and rice diseases. A further review describes biological and integrated means to control rust diseases. In the third, final Section, two innovating approaches to disease management are reviewed: DNA fingerprinting methods, for microbial pathogens diagnostics with potentials in taxonomy and plant protection, and the management of pests and diseases through the exploitation of endophytes and their metabolites, a new research field with interesting perspectives and benefits in IPM/IDM.

Giada at Home: Family Recipes from Italy and California by Giada De Laurentiis
English | March 30, 2010 | ISBN: 0307451011 | 240 Pages | PDF | 10 MB
Since her debut on Food Network in 2002 with the hit program Everyday Italian, Giada De Laurentiis has been enticing Americans with her updated twists on Italian favorites. Her dedication to ease, healthfulness, and-above all else-flavor have won her a permanent place in the hearts of home cooks. In Giada at Home, she shares a personal look into how she cooks for those dearest to her, with simple recipes inspired by her television show of the same name.

Giada at Home: Family Recipes from Italy and California
Born in Italy, Giada was raised in Los Angeles by a gregarious Italian family. While her grandmother, aunt, and mother brought her up on generations-old recipes, Giada also became enamored with the bright and clean flavors of California's abundant seasonal fruits and vegetables. Giada at Home presents recipes from both traditions, all with Giada's signature style. She shares classic Italian recipes passed down through the years, like cheese-stuffed dates wrapped in salty prosciutto, creamy risotto with the earthy and deep flavors of mushrooms and gorgonzola, and lamb chops basted with honey and balsamic vinegar. New family favorites include grilled asparagus and melon, game hens roasted with citrus and herbs, and a sorbet made with pomegranate and mint, all bursting with fresh, vibrant flavors.

No meal would be complete without the company of family and Giada particularly enjoys bringing her loved ones together over meals. For the first time, she incorporates her go-to brunch recipes-what she cooks when setting up a feast on her back patio for everyone on weekend mornings-from Jade-approved Panini, with gooey mozzarella, luscious raspberries, and a sprinkling of brown sugar, to Todd's favorite pancetta-studded waffles scented with cinnamon.

No matter which recipe you choose-classic or contemporary-Giada at Home makes gathering the favorite people in your life for fabulous weeknight meals and family celebrations delicious and easy.

Scurvy: How a Surgeon, a Mariner, and a Gentlemen Solved the Greatest Medical Mystery of the Age of Sail (Audiobook)

Scurvy: How a Surgeon, a Mariner, and a Gentlemen Solved the Greatest Medical Mystery of the Age of Sail (Audiobook) by Stephen R. Bown
English | 2005 | ISBN: n/a | MP3 64 kbps | 220 MB
Scurvy took a terrible toll in the Age of Sail, killing more sailors than were lost in all sea battles combined. The threat of the disease kept ships close to home and doomed those vessels that ventured too far from port.
The willful ignorance of the royal medical elite, who endorsed ludicrous medical theories based on speculative research while ignoring the life-saving properties of citrus fruit, cost tens of thousands of lives and altered the course of many battles at sea. The cure for scurvy ranks among the greatest of human accomplishments, yet its impact on history has, until now, been largely ignored.

From the earliest recorded appearance of the disease in the sixteenth century, to the eighteenth century, where a man had only half a chance of surviving the scourge, to the early nineteenth century, when the British conquered scurvy and successfully blockaded the French and defeated Napoleon, Scurvy is a medical detective story for the ages, the fascinating true story of how James Lind (the surgeon), James Cook (the mariner), and Gilbert Blane (the gentleman) worked separately to eliminate the dreaded affliction.

Scurvy is an evocative journey back to the era of wooden ships and sails, when the disease infiltrated every aspect of seafaring life: press gangs “recruit” mariners on the way home from a late night at the pub; a terrible voyage in search of riches ends with a hobbled fleet and half the crew heaved overboard; Cook majestically travels the South Seas but suffers an unimaginable fate. Brimming with tales of ships, sailors, and baffling bureaucracy, Scurvy is a rare mix of compelling history and classic adventure story.
