Elder Northfield's Home: or, Sacrificed on the Mormon Altar (Legacies of Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers) by A. Jennie Bartlett
English | Feb 1, 2015 | ISBN: 0803271840 | 364 Pages | EPUB/MOBI/AZW3/PDF (Converted) | 6 MB
The practice of plural marriage, commonly known as polygamy, stirred intense controversy in postbellum America until 1890, when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first officially abolished the practice.

Elder Northfield’s Home: or, Sacrificed on the Mormon Altar
Elder Northfield's Home, published by A. Jennie Bartlett in 1882, is both a staunchly antipolygamy novel and a call for the sentimental repatriation of polygamy's victims. Her book traces the fate of a virtuous and educated English immigrant woman, Marion Wescott, who marries a Mormon elder, Henry Northfield. Shocked when her husband violates his promise not to take a second wife, Marion attempts to flee during the night, toddler son in her arms and pulling her worldly possessions in his toy wagon. She returns to her husband, however, and the balance of the novel traces the effects of polygamy on Marion, Henry, and their children; their eventual rejection of plural marriage; and their return to a normal and healthy family structure.

Nicole Tonkovich's critical introduction includes both historical contextualization and comments on selected primary documents, providing a broader look at the general public's reception of the practice of polygamy in the nineteenth century.

Global Positioning: Technologies and Performance
The field of radionavigation signals and systems has seen significant growth in recent years. Satellite systems are very efficient, but owing to their limited exposure and/or availability in some environments, they do not cover the whole spectrum of applications. Thus, many other positioning techniques are being developed. Now, Global Positioning presents an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of various systems with a specific emphasis on those that are satellite-based. Beginning with a description of the evolution of positioning systems, the book provides detailed coverage of the three main Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations, discusses how to cope with indoor positioning, defines development activities and commercial positioning, and proposes a vision for the future of the field. Special features of the book include: Exercises to test and challenge the reader's understanding Direct comparison between constellations and other positioning systems Mathematical content kept to a minimum in order to maximize accessibility and readability Descriptions of European and U.S. discussions for Galileo Historical aspects and links between the distant past and current systems Footnotes that provide hints and comments to the reader At a time when the positioning domain is experiencing such immense transformation, it is vital to have a solid understanding of the fundamental principles, current tech-nologies, and future improvements that will help estimate the performance and limita-tions of existing systems. Global Positioning fills an important need for professionals and students in a variety of fields who want a complete and authoritative overview of global positioning techniques.

Comments From Other Readers

"I taught myself to crochet when I was 7 and that's been my niche ever since. I was looking for a challenge and a co-worker suggested that knitting might be a great cross over. I found it very easy to transition over to. The patterns in this book were fantastic! I loved the little ducky! I think the pictures were a huge help as well. I might just have to put my hook away for a little while!" – Eve (Florida, US)

"I'm a guy. Knitting to me has been for little old ladies. I recently had an accident though and experienced some head trauma. As a result, I've had difficulty with some of my motor functions. My physical therapist actually suggested knitting. I can't knock it until I try to so I went with my sister who knits and picked out some stuff. My first project was a beanie. I think the thing that worked for me was that if I messed up I could just pull it out and start over. After a few weeks of knitting for an hour or more a day, my therapist noted positive changes. This book was a big part of that. I found it easy to follow, even for someone that never touched a knitting needle before." – Bryan (Colorado, US)

Carbohydrate Chemistry: Proven Synthetic Methods, Volume 2

Carbohydrate Chemistry: Proven Synthetic Methods, Volume 2 by Gijsbert van der Marel and Jeroen Codee
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1439875944 | 333 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Long gone are the days when synthetic publications included parallel preparative experiments to document reproducibility of the experimental protocols and when journals required such documentation.

Carbohydrate Chemistry: Proven Synthetic Methods, Volume 2
The new Proven Synthetic Methods Series addresses concerns to chemists regarding irreproducibility of synthetic protocols, lack of characterization data for new compounds, and inflated yields reported in many chemical communications-trends that have recently become a serious problem.
Volume One of Carbohydrate Chemistry: Proven Synthetic Methods includes more detailed versions of protocols previously published for the synthesis of oligosaccharides, C-glycosyl compounds, sugar nucleotides, click chemistry, thioglycosides, and thioimidates, among others. The compilation of protocols covers both common and less frequently used synthetic methods as well as examples of syntheses of selected carbohydrate intermediates with general utility. The major focus of this book is devoted to the proper practice of state-of-the-art preparative procedures, including:
* References to the starting materials used, reaction setup, work-up and isolation of products, followed by identification and proof of purity of the final material
* General information regarding convenience of operation and comments on safety issues
* Versatile and practically useful methods that have not received deserved, long-lasting recognition or that are difficult to access from their primary sources
* Copies of 1D NMR spectra of compounds prepared, showing purity of materials readers can expect
Exploring carbohydrate chemistry from the academic points of view, the Carbohydrate Chemistry: Proven Synthetic Methods Series provides a compendium of preparatively useful procedures checked by chemists from independent research groups.

Algorithms and Data Structures: The Basic Toolbox

Algorithms and Data Structures: The Basic Toolbox by Kurt Mehlhorn
Springer | Jun 23 2008 | ISBN: 3540779779 | Pages: 300 | PDF | 4.64 MB
Algorithms are at the heart of every nontrivial computer application, and algorithmics is a modern and active area of computer science. Every computer scientist and every professional programmer should know about the basic algorithmic toolbox: structures that allow efficient organization and retrieval of data, frequently used algorithms, and basic techniques for modeling, understanding and solving algorithmic problems.

Algorithms and Data Structures: The Basic Toolbox
This book is a concise introduction addressed to students and professionals familiar with programming and basic mathematical language. Individual chapters cover arrays and linked lists, hash tables and associative arrays, sorting and selection, priority queues, sorted sequences, graph representation, graph traversal, shortest paths, minimum spanning trees, and optimization. The algorithms are presented in a modern way, with explicitly formulated invariants, and comment on recent trends such as algorithm engineering, memory hierarchies, algorithm libraries and certifying algorithms. The authors use pictures, words and high-level pseudocode to explain the algorithms, and then they present more detail on efficient implementations using real programming languages like C++ and Java.
The authors have extensive experience teaching these subjects to undergraduates and graduates, and they offer a clear presentation, with examples, pictures, informal explanations, exercises, and some linkage to the real world. Most chapters have the same basic structure: a motivation for the problem, comments on the most important applications, and then simple solutions presented as informally as possible and as formally as necessary. For the more advanced issues, this approach leads to a more mathematical treatment, including some theorems and proofs. Finally, each chapter concludes with a section on further findings, providing views on the state of research, generalizations and advanced solutions.
