Living Waters: Ecology of Animals in Swamps, Rivers, Lakes and Dams by Nick Romanowski
2014 | ISBN: 0643107568 | English | 306 pages | PDF | 54 MB

Living Waters: Ecology of Animals in Swamps, Rivers, Lakes and Dams
Wetlands are often seen as the ultimate symbol of beauty and tranquillity, their clear waters sheltering mysterious animals in a world where change is gentle and slow, from dragonflies skimming above their own reflections to the fishes glimpsed briefly below. Yet Australian wetlands are among the most varied and changeable habitats found anywhere, and the many creatures that live out their lives in and around water are superbly adapted to some of the most unpredictable ecosystems in the world. This book follows the diverse common themes and patterns that link inland waters from Tasmania to the tropics. It shows how cycles of change, the ways that different wetland animals travel through and between wetlands, and the interactions of the animals themselves create an ever-changing ecological kaleidoscope.

Modeling and Simulation-Based Systems Engineering Handbook

FREEDownload : Modeling and Simulation-Based Systems Engineering Handbook

Modeling and Simulation-Based Systems Engineering Handbook (Engineering Management) by Daniele Gianni and Andrea D'Ambrogio
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1466571454 | 513 pages | PDF | 49,7 MB

Modeling and Simulation-Based Systems Engineering Handbook
The capability modeling and simulation (M&S) supplies for managing systems complexity and investigating systems behaviors has made it a central activity in the development of new and existing systems. However, a handbook that provides established M&S practices has not been available. Until now. details the M&S practices for supporting systems engineering in diverse domains. It discusses how you can identify systems engineering needs and adapt these practices to suit specific application domains, thus avoiding redefining practices from scratch.

Although M&S practices are used and embedded within individual disciplines, they are often developed in isolation. However, they address recurring problems common to all disciplines. The editors of this book tackled the challenge by recruiting key representatives from several communities, harmonizing the different perspectives derived from individual backgrounds, and lining them up with the book's vision. The result is a collection of M&S systems engineering examples that offer an initial means for cross-domain capitalization of the knowledge, methodologies, and technologies developed in several communities. These examples provide the pros and cons of the methods and techniques available, lessons learned, and pitfalls to avoid.

As our society moves further in the information era, knowledge and M&S capabilities become key enablers for the engineering of complex systems and systems of systems. Therefore, knowledge and M&S methodologies and technologies become valuable output in an engineering activity, and their cross-domain capitalization is key to further advance the future practices in systems engineering. This book collates information across disciplines to provide you with the tools to more efficiently design and manage complex systems that achieve their goals.

Understanding Developmental Language Disorders: From Theory to Practice

FREEDownload : Understanding Developmental Language Disorders: From Theory to Practice

Understanding Developmental Language Disorders: From Theory to Practice by Courtenay Frazier Norbury and J. Bruce Tomblin
English | 2008-06-27 | ISBN: 1841696668, 1841696676 | PDF | 248 pages | 3 MB

Understanding Developmental Language Disorders: From Theory to Practice
Developmental language disorders (DLD) occur when a child fails to develop his or her native language often for no apparent reason. Delayed development of speech and/or language is one of the most common reasons for parents of preschool children to seek the advice of their family doctor. Although some children rapidly improve, others have more persistent language difficulties. These long-term deficits can adversely affect academic progress, social relationships and mental well-being.

Although DLDs are common, we are still a long way from understanding what causes them and how best to intervene. Understanding Developmental Language Disorders summarises the recent research developments in genetics and neuroimaging studies, assessment techniques and treatment studies to provide an overview of all aspects of DLD. The book investigates the possible genetic and biological causes of the disorder, how best to assess children's language skills to identify when and where communication breakdown occurs, what the long-term outcomes are for children who grow up with DLD, overlaps between DLD and other childhood disorders such as dyslexia and autism and how best to treat children with the disorder. Each chapter is written by a leading authority in the field in a format accessible to researchers, clinicians and families alike.

This book, with its focus on both theory and practice, will be invaluable to students and researchers of speech-language pathology, psychology, psychiatry, linguistics and education. It will also be of interest to practicing speech-language pathologists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, educational psychologists, and teachers and parents of children with developmental language disorders.

Significance of Yavneh & Other Essays in Jewish Hellenism

FREEDownload : Significance of Yavneh & Other Essays in Jewish Hellenism

Shaye J. D. Cohen, "Significance of Yavneh & Other Essays in Jewish Hellenism"
English | ISBN: 3161503759 | 2010 | 629 pages | PDF | 4 MB

Significance of Yavneh & Other Essays in Jewish Hellenism
This volume collects thirty essays by Shaye J.D. Cohen. First published between 1980 and 2006, these essays deal with a wide variety of themes and texts: Jewish Hellenism; Josephus; the Synagogue; Conversion to Judaism; Blood and Impurity; the boundary between Judaism and Christianity. What unites them is their philological orientation. Many of these essays are close studies of obscure passages in Jewish and Christian texts.
The essays are united too by their common assumption that the ancient world was a single cultural continuum; that ancient Judaism, in all its expressions and varieties, was a Hellenism; and that texts written in Hebrew share a world of discourse with those written in Greek. Many of these essays are well-known and have been much discussed in contemporary scholarship. Among these are: "The Significance of Yavneh" (the title essay), "Patriarchs and Scholarchs," "Masada: Literary Tradition, Archaeological Remains, and the Credibility of Josephus," "Epigraphical Rabbis," "The Conversion of Antoninus," "Menstruants and the Sacred in Judaism and Christianity," and "A Brief History of Jewish Circumcision Blood."
Survey of contents:
Jewish Hellenism The Beauty of Flora and the Beauty of Sarai – Sosates the Jewish Homer – The Destruction: From Scripture to Midrash – The Significance of Yavneh – Patriarchs and Scholarchs – False Prophets (4Q339), Netinim (4Q340), and Hellenism at Qumran

Making War Forging Revolution: Russia’s Continuum of Crisis 1914-1921

FREEDownload : Making War Forging Revolution: Russia’s Continuum of Crisis 1914-1921

Peter Holquist, "Making War Forging Revolution: Russia's Continuum of Crisis 1914-1921"
2003 | ISBN-10: 067400907X | 352 pages | Djvu | 6 MB

Making War Forging Revolution: Russia’s Continuum of Crisis 1914-1921
Offering a fundamental reinterpretation of the emergence of the Soviet state, Peter Holquist situates the Bolshevik Revolution within the continuum of mobilization and violence that began with World War I and extended through Russia's civil war. In so doing, Holquist provides a new genealogy for Bolshevik political practices, one that places them clearly among Russian and European wartime measures. From this perspective, the Russian Revolution was no radical rupture with the past, but rather the fulcrum point in a continent-wide era of crisis and violence that began in 1914. While Tsarist and Revolutionary governments implemented policies for total mobilization common to other warring powers, they did so in a supercharged and concentrated form. Holquist highlights how the distinctive contours of Russian political life set its experience in these years apart from other wartime societies. In pursuit of revolution, statesmen carried over crisis-created measures into political life and then incorporated them into the postwar political structure. Focusing on three particular policies – state management of food; the employment of official violence for political ends; and state surveillance -Holquist demonstrates the interplay of state policy and local implementation, and its impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. "Making War, Forging Revolution" casts a new light on Russia's revolution and boldy inserts it into the larger story of the Great War and 20th-century European history.
