Haywired: Pointless (Yet Awesome) Projects for the Electronically Inclined by Mike Rigsby
Unless you live in a haunted house, the eyes on your paintings probably don't follow you around. However, with a couple of motion sensors, two motors, a few transistors, resistors, diodes, and wires you can convert a Van Gogh print into a macabre masterpiece with a mind of its own. Haywired proves that science can inspire odd contraptions. Create a Mona Lisa that smiles even wider when you approach it. Learn how to build and record a talking alarm, or craft your own talking greeting card. Construct a no-battery electric car toy that uses a super capacitor, or a flashlight that can be charged in minutes, then shine for 24 hours. Written for budding electronics hobbyists, author Mike Rigsby offers helpful hints on soldering, wire wrapping, and multimeter use. Each project is described in step-by-step detail with photographs and circuit diagrams. Includes Web sites listing suppliers and part numbers.

Interview Research in Political Science

FREEDownload : Interview Research in Political Science

Layna Mosley, "Interview Research in Political Science"
English | ISBN: 0801478634, 0801451949 | 2013 | 312 pages | PDF (Scan) | 8 MB

Interview Research in Political Science
Interviews are a frequent and important part of empirical research in political science, but graduate programs rarely offer discipline-specific training in selecting interviewees, conducting interviews, and using the data thus collected. addresses this vital need, offering hard-won advice for both graduate students and faculty members. The contributors to this book have worked in a variety of field locations and settings and have interviewed a wide array of informants, from government officials to members of rebel movements and victims of wartime violence, from lobbyists and corporate executives to workers and trade unionists.

The authors encourage scholars from all subfields of political science to use interviews in their research, and they provide a set of lessons and tools for doing so. The book addresses how to construct a sample of interviewees; how to collect and report interview data; and how to address ethical considerations and the Institutional Review Board process. Other chapters discuss how to link interview-based evidence with causal claims; how to use proxy interviews or an interpreter to improve access; and how to structure interview questions. A useful appendix contains examples of consent documents, semistructured interview prompts, and interview protocols.

Mean Curvature Flow and Isoperimetric Inequalities

FREEDownload : Mean Curvature Flow and Isoperimetric Inequalities

Manuel Ritoré, Carlo Sinestrari, Vicente Miquel, Joan Porti, "Mean Curvature Flow and Isoperimetric Inequalities"
2010 | pages: 121 | ISBN: 303460212X | PDF | 1,6 mb

Mean Curvature Flow and Isoperimetric Inequalities
Geometric flows have many applications in physics and geometry. The mean curvature flow occurs in the description of the interface evolution in certain physical models. This is related to the property that such a flow is the gradient flow of the area functional and therefore appears naturally in problems where a surface energy is minimized. The mean curvature flow also has many geometric applications, in analogy with the Ricci flow of metrics on abstract riemannian manifolds. One can use this flow as a tool to obtain classification results for surfaces satisfying certain curvature conditions, as well as to construct minimal surfaces. Geometric flows, obtained from solutions of geometric parabolic equations, can be considered as an alternative tool to prove isoperimetric inequalities. On the other hand, isoperimetric inequalities can help in treating several aspects of convergence of these flows. Isoperimetric inequalities have many applications in other fields of geometry, like hyperbolic manifolds.

Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels

FREEDownload : Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels

Gerhard A. Holzapfel, Ray W. Ogden, "Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 3211958738 | PDF | pages: 351 | 23 mb

Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels
This volume consists of Lecture Notes based on lectures delivered at the Advanced School on "" held at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine, Italy, in the period September 11-15, 2006. The course was presented by 6 lecturers, 2 from Europe, 3 from the USA and 1 from New Zealand, and was attended by more than 100 participants from 23 countries.

The mechanics of biological structures at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels is a multidisciplinary area of research that is expanding rapidly and brings together researchers in biology, medicine, engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science and applied mathematics. Against this background, the aim of the course was to present a state-of-the-art overview of biomechanical modelling at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels, with particular reference to nanos-tructures, cells, growth and remodelling, and the cardiovascular system, including experimental, continuum mechanical, computational and simulation aspects. This provides a rational basis for applications to, for example, (i) tissue engineering, which aims to identify the critical structural and mechanical requirements needed for each tissue construct, (ii) the design and development of implants, and (Hi) the improvement of diagnostics and therapeutical procedures that involve tissue mechanics.

Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes: Fascism, Nazism, Communism

FREEDownload : Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes: Fascism, Nazism, Communism

Paul Corner, "Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes: Fascism, Nazism, Communism"
2009 | ISBN-10: 0199566526 | 248 pages | PDF | 1 MB

Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes: Fascism, Nazism, Communism
Fascism, Nazism, and Communism dominated the history of much of the twentieth century, yet comparatively little attention has focused on popular reactions to the regimes that sprang from these ideologies. Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes is the first volume to investigate popular reactions to totalitarian rule in the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and the communist regimes in Poland and East Germany after 1945.

The contributions, written for this volume by internationally acknowledged experts in their fields, move beyond the rather static vision provided by traditional themes of consent and coercion to construct a more nuanced picture of everyday life in the various regimes. The book provides many new insights into the ways totalitarian regimes functioned and the reasons for their decline, encouraging comparisons between the different regimes and stimulating re-evaluation of long-established positions.
