Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know?

Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know? by Philip E. Tetlock
English | 2006 | ISBN: 0691128715, 0691123020 | 352 pages | EPUB | 5 MB

Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know?
The intelligence failures surrounding the invasion of Iraq dramatically illustrate the necessity of developing standards for evaluating expert opinion. This book fills that need. Here, Philip E. Tetlock explores what constitutes good judgment in predicting future events, and looks at why experts are often wrong in their forecasts.

Tetlock first discusses arguments about whether the world is too complex for people to find the tools to understand political phenomena, let alone predict the future. He evaluates predictions from experts in different fields, comparing them to predictions by well-informed laity or those based on simple extrapolation from current trends. He goes on to analyze which styles of thinking are more successful in forecasting. Classifying thinking styles using Isaiah Berlin's prototypes of the fox and the hedgehog, Tetlock contends that the fox–the thinker who knows many little things, draws from an eclectic array of traditions, and is better able to improvise in response to changing events–is more successful in predicting the future than the hedgehog, who knows one big thing, toils devotedly within one tradition, and imposes formulaic solutions on ill-defined problems. He notes a perversely inverse relationship between the best scientific indicators of good judgement and the qualities that the media most prizes in pundits–the single-minded determination required to prevail in ideological combat.

Clearly written and impeccably researched, the book fills a huge void in the literature on evaluating expert opinion. It will appeal across many academic disciplines as well as to corporations seeking to develop standards for judging expert decision-making.

1494: How a Family Feud in Medieval Spain Divided the World in Half

1494: How a Family Feud in Medieval Spain Divided the World in Half
In 1494, award-winning author Stephen R. Bown tells the untold story of the explosive feud between monarchs, clergy, and explorers that split the globe between Spain and Portugal and made the world's oceans a battleground.

When Columbus triumphantly returned from America to Spain in 1493, his discoveries inflamed an already-smouldering conflict between Spain's renowned monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, and Portugal's João II. Which nation was to control the world's oceans? To quell the argument, Pope Alexander VI-the notorious Rodrigo Borgia-issued a proclamation laying the foundation for the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494, an edict that created an imaginary line in the Atlantic Ocean dividing the entire known (and unknown) world between Spain and Portugal.

Just as the world's oceans were about to be opened by Columbus's epochal voyage, the treaty sought to limit the seas to these two favored Catholic nations. The edict was to have a profound influence on world history: it propelled Spain and Portugal to superpower status, steered many other European nations on a collision course, and became the central grievance in two centuries of international espionage, piracy, and warfare.

The treaty also began the fight for "the freedom of the seas"-the epic struggle to determine whether the world's oceans, and thus global commerce, would be controlled by the decree of an autocrat or be open to the ships of any nation-a distinctly modern notion, championed in the early seventeenth century by the Dutch legal theorist Hugo Grotius, whose arguments became the foundation of international law.

At the heart of one of the greatest international diplomatic and political agreements of the last five centuries were the strained relationships and passions of a handful of powerful individuals. They were linked by a shared history, mutual animosity, and personal obligations-quarrels, rivalries, and hatreds that dated back decades. Yet the struggle ultimately stemmed from a young woman's determination to defy tradition and the king, and to choose her own husband.

China Contested: Western Powers in East Asia

Matthew J. Flynn "China Contested: Western Powers in East Asia"
Chelsea House Publications | English | 2006-07-30 | ISBN: 079108650X | 132 pages | PDF | 2,4 MB

China Contested: Western Powers in East Asia
Riding the wave of one of the most accelerated economic expansions in history, China is on the brink of emerging as a global juggernaut. One of the chief reasons for its success has been its ability to unite itself, expel the physical presence of Western powers from its soil, and reoccupy Hong Kong and Macao. "" examines the country's artificial divisions over time, tracing interference by the West back to the early 16th century. This intrusion peaked during the establishment of Western spheres of influence in the late 19th century, yet it continues to resonate today with the standoff over Taiwan. Author Matthew J. Flynn points out that while China has endured many divisions throughout its past, the borders imposed by the West were strictly political and had no geographic or historical basis. "China Contested" will help students grasp the concept that China's determination to be recognized as a great power coincided with its resolve to eliminate the arbitrary borders created by the West.

Dare, Dream, Do: Remarkable Things Happen When You Dare to Dream (Audiobook)

FREEDownload : Dare, Dream, Do: Remarkable Things Happen When You Dare to Dream (Audiobook)

Dare, Dream, Do: Remarkable Things Happen When You Dare to Dream By Whitney Johnson, read by Karen Saltus
Unabridged edition 2014 | 7 hours and 8 mins | ISBN: n/a, ASIN: B00I619TA2 | M4A @ 56 kbps | 173 MB
Whitney Johnson, popular Harvard Business Review blogger, has a goal: to help us identify and achieve our dreams. Her belief is that we can each achieve greater happiness when focusing both on our dreams and on other people in our lives. In this inspiring book, Johnson directs her attention to teaching women, in particular, a three-step model for personal advancement and happiness. She first encourages us to DARE to boldly step out, to consider disrupting life as we know it.

Dare, Dream, Do: Remarkable Things Happen When You Dare to Dream (Audiobook)
Then she teaches us how to DREAM, to give life to the many possibilities available, whether to start a business, run a marathon, or travel the world. She shows us how to "date" our dreams (no need to commit!) and how to make space for dreams. Finally, Whitney's model brings out the businesswoman in her; she teaches us to DO, to execute our dreams. She showcases the importance of sharing dreams with others to give them life, creating your own "dream team".

Rich with real stories of women who have dared to dream, Dare, Dream, Do offers a practical framework to realize one's true potential. In her mid-twenties, Whitney found herself in New York, where she landed a secretarial job on Wall Street. With no relevant experience, and a bit shy on confidence, she contemplated her future and her dreams. Through determination and hard work, Whitney became an investment banker, moving to the analyst side of the business, executing the plans she'd laid out for herself. Naively, she thought most women were following similar paths until she started talking and found that many women were not daring to dream at all.

It was because of these conversations that she started a blog in 2006, which became the inspiration for this book. Dare, Dream, Do is full of remarkable stories of women, which will no doubt inspire others to follow suit. Although Whitney focuses on the stories of women, her blog is popular with men as well, and her advice speaks to either gender.
