Rhodiola rosea (Traditional Herbal Medicines for Modern Times) by Alain Cuerrier, Kwesi Ampong-Nyarko
2014 | ISBN: 143988840X | English | 304 pages | PDF | 33 MB

Rhodiola rosea
The genus Rhodiola (Family Crassulaceae) is indigenous to Northern Canada, Europe and Asia where its rhizomes and roots have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes. Recent interest in the species (roseroot) in the West arose from the use of the rhizome as an adaptogen for the treatment of stress, but in the last few years, chemical and pharmacological studies have confirmed other valuable medicinal properties.

Written by well-known researchers in this field of study, examines important aspects of this increasingly important medicinal plant, including:

Cultivation
Taxonomy
Ethnobotany
Conservation
Phytopathology
Phytochemistry
Pharmacology
Biotechnology

The book discusses in vitro culture of R. rosea and examines pests and diseases affecting the plant in Europe, Canada, and Alaska. It also examines pharmacological bioassays and toxicology. The contributors provide a meta-analysis of clinical trials and describe experimentation with R. rosea in clinical practice. They explore its use in a range of areas, including for depression and anxiety disorders, to improve sexual and immune functions, to augment cancer treatment, and in aerospace medicine for afflictions such as mountain sickness and jet lag. The final chapter uses a model to illustrate the cultivation of R. rosea as an industrial crop from field to medicine to cabinet. Synthesizing the most important literature in recent years, the book supplies a comprehensive peer-reviewed survey of the wide spectrum of possibilities for its use as a modern phytomedicinal agent.

Understanding Immunology, 3rd Edition (Cell and Molecular Biology in Action) by Peter Wood
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0273730681 | 392 pages | PDF | 21,4 MB

Understanding Immunology, 3rd Edition
Understanding Immunology is a well-established introduction to this complex subject for readers with no previous exposure. It is aimed primarily at undergraduates in biological sciences, biomedical sciences and medicine. The selection and order of topic coverage is designed to instruct effectively, and a variety of boxed examples add depth and historical context for those readers wanting to go beyond the essentials. The first part of the book (Chapters 1 to 11) takes students through the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and describes the molecules, cells and tissues of the immune system that provide protection against a wide variety of pathogens. It also describes how mankind has utilised the immune system, from the development of vaccines to the production of reagents for use in the clinic and laboratory. The final four chapters describe how the immune system operates in disease situations such as allergy, autoimmunity and transplantation. This third edition is revised to cover the latest experimental and clinical changes in the subject, particularly those in the development of lymphocytes; the different types of CD4 helper T cells; the use of antibodies, including monoclonal antibodies, as experimental and clinical tools; and immunological tolerance. Dr. Peter Wood is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Manchester. He has over 20 years of teaching experience, both in the UK and in the USA, and is widely published in the literature. His current research interest is the role of cytokines in the development of diabetes.

The Dynamics of Linguistic Variation: Corpus evidence on English past and present

FREEDownload : The Dynamics of Linguistic Variation: Corpus evidence on English past and present

The Dynamics of Linguistic Variation: Corpus evidence on English past and present by Prof. Dr. Terttu Nevalainen and Prof. Dr. Irma Taavitsainen
English | 2008-12-03 | ISBN: 9027234825 | PDF | 347 pages | 3 MB

The Dynamics of Linguistic Variation: Corpus evidence on English past and present
Variability is characteristic of any living language. This volume approaches the ‘life cycle’ of linguistic variability in English using data sources that range from electronic corpora to the internet. In the spirit of the 1968 Weinreich, Labov and Herzog classic, the fifteen contributions divide into three sections, each highlighting different stages in the dynamics of English across time and space. They show, first, how increase in variability can be initiated by processes that give rise to new patterns of discourse, which can ultimately crystallize into new grammatical elements. The next phase is the spread of linguistic features and patterns of discourse, both new and well established, through the social and regional varieties of English. The final phase in this ebb and flow of linguistic variability consists of processes promoting some variable features over others across registers and regional and social varieties, thus resulting in reduced variation and increased linguistic homogeneity.

Religion and Culture in Early Modern Europe, 1500-1800

FREEDownload : Religion and Culture in Early Modern Europe, 1500-1800

Kasper von Greyerz "Religion and Culture in Early Modern Europe, 1500-1800"
Oxford University Press | 2007-10-22 | ISBN: 0195327667 | 320 pages | PDF | 2 MB

Religion and Culture in Early Modern Europe, 1500-1800
In the pre-industrial societies of early modern Europe, religion was a vessel of fundamental importance in making sense of personal and collective social, cultural and spiritual exercises. Developments from this era had immediate impact on these societies, much of which resonates to the present day. Published in German seven years ago, Kaspar von Greyerz important overview and interpretation of the religions and cultures of Early Modern Europe now appears in the English language for the first time. He approaches his subject matter with the concerns of a social anthropologist, rejecting the conventional dichotomy between popular and elite religion to focus instead on religion in its everyday cultural contexts. Concentrating primarily on Central and Western Europe, von Greyerz analyzes the dynamic strengths of early modern religion in three parts. First, he identifies the changes in religious life resulting from the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation. He then reveals how the dynamic religious climate triggered various radical and separatist movements, such as the Anabaptists, puritans, and Quakers, and how the newfound emphasis on collective religious identity contributed to the marginalization of non-Christians and outsiders. Last, von Greyerz investigates the broad and still much divided field of research on secularization during the period covered. While many large-scale historical approaches to early modern religion have concentrated on institutional aspects, this important study consciously neglects these elements to provide new and fascinating insights. The resulting work delves into the many distinguishing marks of the period: religious reform and renewal, the hotly debated issue of "confessionalism", social inclusion and exclusion, and the increasing fragmentation of early modern religiosity in the context of the Enlightenment. In a final chapter, von Greyerz addresses the question as to whether early modern religion carried in itself the seeds of its own relativization.

Leonardo's Mountain of Clams and the Diet of Worms: Essays on Natural History
Language: English | EPUB / MOBI | ISBN-10: 0609601415 | 1998 | 416 pages | 0.4 MB / 0.8 MB
Leonardo's Mountain of Clams and the Diet of Worms is the newest collection of best-selling scientist Stephen Jay Gould's popular essays from Natural History magazine (the longest-running series of scientific essays in history). It is also the first of the final three such collections, since Dr. Gould has announced that the series will end with the turn of the millennium.

Leonardo’s Mountain of Clams and the Diet of Worms: Essays on Natural History
In this collection, Gould consciously and unconventionally formulates a humanistic natural history, a consideration of how humans have learned to study and understand nature, rather than a history of nature itself. With his customary brilliance, Gould examines the puzzles and paradoxes great and small that build nature's and humanity's diversity and order. In affecting short biographies, he depicts how scholars grapple with problems of science and philosophy as he illuminates the interaction of the outer world with the unique human ability to struggle to understand the whys and wherefores of existence.

Cable Confidence: A Guide to Textured Knitting by Sara Louise Harper
Think cables are too tricky to master? Debunk that myth today! Cabling is just a series of knits and purls. If you can knit and purl, you already have the foundation for making
gorgeous textured sweaters. A new knitting world will open up as soon as you learn the basics.

– Unlock the mysteries of reading stitch charts, using cable needles, swatching, and much more with this beginner friendly guide

– Start with the easiest stitches, and then move on to more complex techniques, one step at a time

– Knit up starter projects like pillows, scarves, and an afghan, and then move on to gorgeous pullovers and cardigans 14 projects in all

There are 5 very nice aran sweaters all classic mode which usually means drop down shoulders. What is interesting to me is the beauty of the aran combinations which is not so easy to design and with a pullover you do have more scope to do just that. For example, I find the cover sweater to be very aesthetically pleasing. The final sweater in the book, Ciaran pullover, is another stunning aran with a beautiful central cable pattern set off by mirrored cables on the sides. The Fiona vest uses an allover cable plus zipper. The first two sweaters are aimed for beginners with simpler cables. There are 9 pullovers, one v-neck cardigan, one cardigan vest, 3 pillows, one scarf, one felted bag and one hat. Photos in color are good as are the charts and schematics. Sizes go from finished chest of 36" to 54" in some examples. Most yarns called for are worsted weight or #4 on the yarn system. All the sleeves are done drop down which was the standard method until about a year ago and this book was probably begun a few years back. The sleeves don't look very good on the models as they are longer than the models' arms and also appear to be too wide. Certainly the more advanced knitter can change the sleeves to fit more attractively. For anyone interested in aran and cabled sweaters, this is an excellent choice.
