Brotherhood: Dharma, Destiny, and the American Dream
Language: English | EPUB / MOBI | ISBN-10: 0544032101 | 2013 | 384 pages | 1 MB / 1 MB
The inspiring story of two brothers who immigrated to America from India and took very different paths to becoming world-renowned healers and teachers.

Brotherhood: Dharma, Destiny, and the American Dream
At a time when America is fiercely divided on the issue of immigration, Brotherhood tells the story of two brothers who pursued the American dream to its fullest expression. In the early 1970s, Deepak and Sanjiv Chopra joined a flood of immigrants looking to make a new life in America, a land of opportunity. Having grown up in postwar India amidst the sudden freedom of the 1947 liberation, their childhood was a blend of the exotic, the mythical, and the modern. Their father was one of the first Indians to become a Western-trained cardiologist, while their extended family maintained deep roots in ancient spiritual traditions.

Brotherhood follows the Chopra brothers as one becomes a world-renowned spiritual teacher and the other rises to the top of Western medicine to become a professor at Harvard Medical School. Their story will fascinate and inspire anyone who still believes in America's capacity to foster achievement and reward hard work.

Countdown To Apocalypse: A Scientific Exploration Of The End Of The World

Countdown To Apocalypse: A Scientific Exploration Of The End Of The World by Paul Halpern
English | 2000 | ISBN-10: 0738203580 | PDF | 296 pages | 27,7 MB
Get ready now. Everything ends eventually, and life as we know it must sooner or later wind down. Physicist Paul Halpern pursues eschatology from the merely global to the truly universal in Countdown to Apocalypse: A Scientific Exploration of the End of the World.

Countdown To Apocalypse: A Scientific Exploration Of The End Of The World
In this surprisingly lively, engaging book, Halpern examines the history of the end of the world (including the first wave of millennialism in the 10th century), potential doomsdays from nuclear war to global warming, and finally the inevitable collapse or dispersal of the universe itself. His explanations of the relevant physics are sparkling. Intriguingly, he is equally conversant in the important psychological factors motivating our interest and occasional strange behavior regarding the end. Tales of Heaven's Gate and Jonestown believers, and others more fortunate but no less deluded, pepper the all-too-real depictions of asteroid collisions, ozone holes, and the death of our sun. While it would be easy to wallow in despair, Halpern's consistently charming prose and optimistic turns keep the reader going eagerly from one awful scenario to the next. Sure, the end is near, but with a bit of luck and foresight, we should still have millions of years left to worry about it. –Rob Lightner

A guide to the myriad possibilities for cosmic apocalypse.

Inspired by the end of the millennium, celebrated science writer Paul Halpern tackles the fate of human civilization and our planet in this meditation on the end of the world. Beginning with the religious origins of the idea of apocalypse, Halpern shows how science has borrowed the metaphor to describe potential worldwide catastrophes. He spins out various scenarios for destruction, from nuclear war and global warming to a great flood and a new Ice Age. He argues that while human history will someday come to a close-even if we survived for billions of years, we would eventually face the end of the universe itself-in the meantime we have gained extraordinary control over our fate as a species. Faced with the power to steer our planet toward paradise or transform it into hell, he says, we must take steps to avoid those catalysts of apocalypse that are within our control.

The Overflowing Brain: Information Overload and the Limits of Working Memory

Torkel Klingberg, "The Overflowing Brain: Information Overload and the Limits of Working Memory"
English | 2008-11-07 | ISBN: 0195372883 | 217 pages | PDF | 2 MB

The Overflowing Brain: Information Overload and the Limits of Working Memory
As the pace of technological change accelerates, we are increasingly experiencing a state of information overload. Statistics show that we are interrupted every three minutes during the course of the work day. Multitasking between email, cell-phone, text messages, and four or five websites while listening to an iPod forces the brain to process more and more informaton at greater and greater speeds. And yet the human brain has hardly changed in the last 40,000 years.

Are all these high-tech advances overtaxing our Stone Age brains or is the constant flood of information good for us, giving our brains the daily exercise they seem to crave? In The Overflowing Brain, cognitive scientist Torkel Klingberg takes us on a journey into the limits and possibilities of the brain. He suggests that we should acknowledge and embrace our desire for information and mental challenges, but try to find a balance between demand and capacity. Klingberg explores the cognitive demands, or "complexity," of everyday life and how the brain tries to meet them. He identifies different types of attention, such as stimulus-driven and controlled attention, but focuses chiefly on "working memory," our capacity to keep information in mind for short periods of time. Dr Klingberg asserts that working memory capacity, long thought to be static and hardwired in the brain, can be improved by training, and that the increasing demands on working memory may actually have a constructive effect: as demands on the human brain increase, so does its capacity.

The book ends with a discussion of the future of brain development and how we can best handle information overload in our everyday lives. Klingberg suggests how we might find a balance between demand and capacity and move from feeling overwhelmed to deeply engaged.

The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History Through the Heart of the Grand Canyon (Audiobook)
From one of Outside magazine’s “Literary All-Stars” comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983.

In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history. In the midst of this crisis, the decision to launch a small wooden dory named “The Emerald Mile” at the head of the Grand Canyon, just fifteen miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam, seemed not just odd, but downright suicidal.

The Emerald Mile, at one time slated to be destroyed, was rescued and brought back to life by Kenton Grua, the man at the oars, who intended to use this flood as a kind of hydraulic sling-shot. The goal was to nail the all-time record for the fastest boat ever propelled—by oar, by motor, or by the grace of God himself—down the entire length of the Colorado River from Lee’s Ferry to Lake Mead. Did he survive? Just barely. Now, this remarkable, epic feat unfolds here, in The Emerald Mile.

Handbook of Blended Shore Education: Adult Program Development and Delivery

Gabriele Strohschen – Handbook of Blended Shore Education: Adult Program Development and Delivery
Published: 2008-11-14 | ISBN: 0387094423 | PDF | 346 pages | 5 MB

The delivery of adult education programs has developed into an industry with global players in education and corporate institutions. Education is increasingly becoming a commodity exported to emerging economies by "first world" institutions. With the thirst for such blended shore programs by these consumers, there is a danger of malpractice if educators do not mindfully and critically examine their practice and learn through reflection and analysis. While maintaining a commitment to adult education as a means to educate, train and develop leaders for social sustainability, the impact of these educational practices also needs to be examined.
In the Handbook of Blended Shore Education, educators and trainers critically examine their experience with blended shore programming and derive recommendations for good practices from such reflection and analysis. A group of internationally renowned authors raise vital questions about the export of education as a commodity wherein education maintains a purely instrumental value. It introduces an interdependent "next level" in blended shore education that can be achieved when the partner countries reach a transformation point where both benefit from examined values and the time and costs invested in the program. With that, this important book proffers a paradigm of good practices for blended shore programs that goes beyond delineating so-termed best practices.
Sound adult education principles and models of adult education are presented as a means for sustainable social and economic development. Sharing the lessons learned about program design and delivery with candid narrations about the design, development, and delivery of such programs, and narrated by authentic voices in the field, authors from around the world contribute to the emerging knowledge base of international (or blended shore) adult education. This is a knowledge base that acknowledges the value of indigenous wisdoms, the importance of individual performance improvement, and the inextricability of international education based on interdependence and collaborative education program design and delivery.
The recommendations support a professional practice of international adult education that is clearly rooted in an examined praxis, and are useful for program planners, practitioners, and chief learning officers in public and private education endeavors from the grass roots to the boardroom. With a backdrop of non-formal education; higher education; corporate training; workforce development; and basic education program settings, the Handbook of Blended Shore Education, examines what worked and what didn't work and brings the lessons learned to today's program administrators, CLOs, trainers, teachers, and community workers.
