Piles and Pile Foundations by Carlo Viggiani, Alessandro Mandolini, Gianpiero Russo
2012 | ISBN: 0415490669 | English | 289 pages | PDF | 26 MB

Piles and Pile Foundations
Piled foundations are generally designed using empirical methods, in particular the traditional capacity based approach on which the majority of codes of practice are based. However in recent years the analysis of pile groups and piled rafts has undergone substantial development in the light of new research and the mechanisms for the interactions between piles, soil and rafts or caps have been largely clarified. Paradoxically, with relatively large piled rafts it has been found that a design based on the criterion of serviceability, with the limitation of absolute and/or differential settlement, not only allows a more rational and economical design, but is also simpler and more reliable than one based on the traditional approach.

This book provides an overview of present design practice of piled foundations, under both vertical and horizontal loads, and then a presentation of recent advances in the analysis and design of piled rafts. Altogether it forms a thorough guide to the design and analysis of efficient and effective piled rafts, and it also serves as a useful design handbook for traditional pile foundations.

Classical Electromagnetism via Relativity

W. G. V. Rosser, "Classical Electromagnetism via Relativity"
1968 | pages: 302 | ISBN: 0408433000, 1489962581 | DJVU | 2,3 mb

Classical Electromagnetism via Relativity
One of the arts of teaching is to attack a problem from a different point of view, if the conventional approach has not been fully appreciated. This often helps the class to appreciate the conventional approach more fully. Maxwell's equations are generally introduced during a long course on electromagnetism, in which the correct interpretations and experimental bases of Maxwell's equations are sometimes obscured by the large amount of time of necessity devoted to the important applications of individual laws. The displacement 'current' is often introduced in a way that gives the wrong impression of its role in contemporary electromagnetic theory. There have been refinements of interpretation since Maxwell's time, particularly following the abandonment of the ether theories and the introduction of the theory of relativity. This is particularly true of the displacement 'current'. In this monograph, Maxwell's equations are approached from a different point of view from the conventional approach, namely using Coulomb's law and the transformations of the theory of special relativity. This approach illustrates the essential unity of Maxwell's equations, and the modern interpretation of the various terms in Maxwell's equations. It is the reverse of the historical approach, since the theory of special relativity arose out of optics and electromagnetism.

Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter

Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter By Antonia Fraser
Publisher: Na.n A. Ta.le.se 2010 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 0385532504 | EPUB | 12 MB

Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter
Fraser is a highly regarded British biographer, and the late Harold Pinter, her husband, was a Nobel-winning British playwright. So, the circle they generally traveled in was made up of not only fellow writers but also, because of their individual and combined celebrity, fellow celebrities. Fraser's latest book is both joyous and sad. The former because she shares diary entries concerning her relationship with Pinter (they lived together from August 1975 until Christmas 2008), and it was obviously a stimulating love-match. And sad because the book ends when it does because of Pinter's death from cancer; his struggle with the disease had been years-long. As expected, given their fame and the fame of their associates, lots of name-dropping goes on here. This is not, of course, the story of two starving artists trying to scratch together a living in some cold-water flat. But privileged as they were, they nevertheless experienced the normal highs and lows together, and the result is a poignant read. Serious readers will generate demand for this title, and they will respond with gratitude to Fraser's intimacy.

Transnational Environmental Crime: Toward an Eco-global Criminology

FREEDownload : Transnational Environmental Crime: Toward an Eco-global Criminology

Transnational Environmental Crime: Toward an Eco-global Criminology by Rob White
English | 2011-07-18 | ISBN: 1843928035, 1843928027 | PDF | 192 pages | 2,6 MB

Transnational Environmental Crime: Toward an Eco-global Criminology
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to and overview of eco-global criminology. Eco-global criminology refers to a criminological approach that is informed by ecological considerations and by a critical analysis that is global in scale and perspective. Based upon eco-justice conceptions of harm, it focuses on transgressions against environments, non-human species and humans.

At the centre of eco-global criminology is analysis of transnational environmental crime. This includes crimes related to pollution (of air, water and land) and crimes against wildlife (including illegal trade in ivory as well as live animals). It also includes those harms that pose threats to the environment more generally (such as global warming). In addressing these issues, the book deals with topics such as the conceptualization of environmental crime or harm, the researching of transnational environmental harm, climate change and social conflict, threats to biodiversity, toxic waste and the transference of harm, prosecution and sentencing of environmental crimes, and environmental victimization and transnational activism.
This book argues that analysis of transnational environmental crime needs to incorporate different notions of harm, and that the overarching perspective of eco-global criminology provides the framework for this.
Transnational Environmental Crime will be an essential resource for students, academics, policy-makers, environmental managers, police, magistrates and others with a general interest in environmental issues.

Dig deep into this recipe book and discover the cool, refreshing, interesting, but definitely delicious mint-infused recipes from all over the world. These irresistible recipes will make you salivate while preparing them and overwhelm your taste buds once you put them in your mouth.

The Biological Foundations of Bioethics by Tim Lewens
English | 2015 | ISBN: 0198712650 | 192 pages | PDF | 1 MB

The Biological Foundations of Bioethics
Much recent thought on the ethics of new biomedical technologies, and work in ethics and political philosophy more generally, is committed to hidden and contestable views about the nature of biological reality. This selection of essays by Tim Lewens, a leading expert in the field, teases out these biological foundations of bioethical writing and subjects them to scrutiny. The topics covered include human enhancement, the risks of technical progress, the alleged moral threat of synthetic biology, the reality of human nature, the relevance of evolutionary psychology to social policy, the nature of the distinction between health and disease, and justice in healthcare decision-making.

Odd Markets in Japanese History: Law and Economic Growth (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions) By J. Mark Ramseyer
Publisher: Cambridge University Press November 2009 | 212 Pages | ISBN: 0521563860 0521048257 | PDF | 8.6 MB

Odd Markets in Japanese History: Law and Economic Growth (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions)
Employing a rational-choice approach, Professor Ramseyer studies the impact of Japanese law on economic growth in Japan. Toward that end, the author investigates the way law governed various markets, and the way that people negotiated contracts within those markets. Findings reveal that the legal system generally promoted mutually advantageous deals, and that people generally negotiated in ways that shrewdly promoted their private best interests. Whether in the markets for indentured servants, prostitutes, or marriage partners, this study reports little evidence of either age- or gender-related exploitation.

A Field Guide to Mushrooms: North America (Peterson Field Guides) by Kent H. McKnight
More than 1,000 species of mushrooms described in detail. Over 700 paintings and drawings reveal subtle field marks that cannot be captured into photographs.

This field guide is nearly twenty years old, but there are so few field guides to fungi that it still remains a standard reference. Like all Peterson field guides, it is handy and compact and can easily be taken into the field and pored over with the mushrooms in their wild habitat. The text is detailed and accurate and a "similar species" section is very useful. However, this guide uses painted plates whereas amateurs generally find it easier to identify fungi by photographs. I personally find photographs more accurate, but enjoy paintings in their own right. In this case the paintings are pleasing and quite faithful.

The New Making of a Cook, 2nd Edition

FREEDownload : The New Making of a Cook, 2nd Edition

The New Making of a Cook, 2nd Edition
English| 1254 Pages | ISBN: 0688152546 | scanned PDF | 197 MB
Although this massive book began as a revision of Kamman's classic The Making of a Cook (1971), it's really an entirely new work; the text has been rewritten and greatly expanded, and few of the recipes are the same. The organization is similar, based generally on techniques and "building blocks" rather than courses of a meal (not surprisingly, the chapter titled "The True Way to That Man's Heart" has been dropped). While classic French dishes are still important, there are many lighter recipes, and Kamman, aware of the realities of the modern work week, incorporates time-saving suggestions and variations into more complicated recipes. Kamman's masterwork contains an incredible amount of information not only on techniques and ingredients but also on food science, cultural and culinary history, and myriad other topics. Although the book's size may seem intimidating, home cooks will find many creative everyday recipes here, and more ambitious cooks will turn to it for both inspiration and reference. Highly recommended.
