Learning from Leonardo: Decoding the Notebooks of a Genius

Learning from Leonardo: Decoding the Notebooks of a Genius by Fritjof Capra
English | 2013 | ISBN: 1609949897 | 384 pages | EPUB | 19 MB

Learning from Leonardo: Decoding the Notebooks of a Genius
eonardo da Vinci was a brilliant artist, scientist, engineer, mathematician, architect, inventor, writer, and even musician—the archetypal Renaissance man. But he was also, Fritjof Capra argues, a profoundly modern man. Not only did Leonardo invent the empirical scientific method over a century before Galileo and Francis Bacon, but Capra's decade-long study of Leonardo's fabled notebooks reveal him as a systems thinker centuries before the term was coined. He believed the key to truly understanding the world was in perceiving the connections between phenomena and the larger patterns formed by those relationships. This is precisely the kind of holistic approach the complex problems we face today demand. Capra describes seven defining characteristics of Leonardo da Vinci's genius and includes a list of over forty discoveries Leonardo made that weren't rediscovered until centuries later. Leonardo pioneered entire fields—fluid dynamics, theoretical botany, aerodynamics, embryology. Capra's overview of Leonardo's thought follows the organizational scheme Leonardo himself intended to use if he ever published his notebooks. So in a sense, this is Leonardo's science as he himself would have presented it. Leonardo da Vinci saw the world as a dynamic, integrated whole, so he always applied concepts from one area to illuminate problems in another. For example, his studies of the movement of water informed his ideas about how landscapes are shaped, how sap rises in plants, how air moves over a bird's wing, and how blood flows in the human body. His observations of nature enhanced his art, his drawings were integral to his scientific studies, and he brought art and science together in his extraordinarily beautiful and elegant mechanical and architectural designs. Obviously, we can't all be geniuses on the scale of Leonardo da Vinci. But by exploring the mind of the preeminent Renaissance genius, we can gain profound insights into how best to address the challenges of the 21st century.

The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens

Matthew R. Christ "The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens"
Cambridge University Press | 2006-10-02 | ISBN: 0521864321 | 262 pages | PDF | 3 MB

The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens
This book provides a fresh perspective on Athenian democracy by exploring bad citizenship, both as a reality and an idea, in classical Athens, from the late sixth century down to 322. If called upon, Athenian citizens were expected to support their city through military service and financial outlay. These obligations were fundamental to Athenian understandings of citizenship and it was essential to the city's well-being that citizens fulfill them. The ancient sources, however, are full of allegations that individuals have avoided these duties or performed them deficiently. Claims of draft evasion, cowardice on the battlefield, and avoidance of liturgies and the war tax are common. By examining the nature and scope of bad citizenship in Athens and the city's responses – institutional and ideological – to the phenomenon, this study aims to illuminate the relationship between citizen and city under the Athenian democracy, and more broadly, the tension between private interests and public authority in human societies.

Essentials of Plastic Surgery By Jeffrey E. Janis
2007 | 941 Pages | ISBN: 1576262081 | scanned PDF | 42 MB

Essentials of Plastic Surgery
is destined to become a favorite with all students of plastic surgery, whether residents in training or experienced practitioners. Small enough to fit in a lab coat pocket, but comprehensive enough to cover the essential topics in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, this exceptional manual is just the resource that you have been looking for. It will prove invaluable as a quick reference in daily practice, when studying for the boards, or simply as a refresher when confronting a difficult clinical problem.

This book evolved from the outstanding plastic surgery training program at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where Dr. Janis trained and is on staff. Contributors are drawn from current residents and fellows from the program who share their practical, hands-on experience.

Concise Yet Comprehensive Coverage
This practical manual provides essential information in a convenient and easily accessible outline format. Composed of 88 chapters, the book is divided into 7 separate sections:
Fundamentals and Basics
Skin and Soft Tissue
Head and Neck
Breast
Trunk and Lower Extremity
Hand, Wrist, and Upper Extremity
Aesthetic Surgery

Unlike many handbooks, this book does not skimp on aesthetic surgery information; face lift, neck lift, fillers, and breast augmentation are given equal time with reconstructive topics such as wound healing, flaps, and microsurgery. A detailed bibliography is included at the end of each chapter to direct the reader to additional resource material.

Design Enhances Readability and Practicality

This handbook's design and organization allow quick and easy reading. The outline format permits optimal coverage of information and facilitates retention and understanding. Bulleted lists, tables, boxes, and numerous illustrations help to illuminate key points and important information. In addition, the two-color design increases the text's readability and makes it easier to locate information.

No other plastic surgery handbook provides as much information in such a compact format.
