Rhodiola rosea

FREEDownload : Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola rosea (Traditional Herbal Medicines for Modern Times) by Alain Cuerrier, Kwesi Ampong-Nyarko
2014 | ISBN: 143988840X | English | 304 pages | PDF | 33 MB

Rhodiola rosea
The genus Rhodiola (Family Crassulaceae) is indigenous to Northern Canada, Europe and Asia where its rhizomes and roots have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes. Recent interest in the species (roseroot) in the West arose from the use of the rhizome as an adaptogen for the treatment of stress, but in the last few years, chemical and pharmacological studies have confirmed other valuable medicinal properties.

Written by well-known researchers in this field of study, examines important aspects of this increasingly important medicinal plant, including:

Cultivation
Taxonomy
Ethnobotany
Conservation
Phytopathology
Phytochemistry
Pharmacology
Biotechnology

The book discusses in vitro culture of R. rosea and examines pests and diseases affecting the plant in Europe, Canada, and Alaska. It also examines pharmacological bioassays and toxicology. The contributors provide a meta-analysis of clinical trials and describe experimentation with R. rosea in clinical practice. They explore its use in a range of areas, including for depression and anxiety disorders, to improve sexual and immune functions, to augment cancer treatment, and in aerospace medicine for afflictions such as mountain sickness and jet lag. The final chapter uses a model to illustrate the cultivation of R. rosea as an industrial crop from field to medicine to cabinet. Synthesizing the most important literature in recent years, the book supplies a comprehensive peer-reviewed survey of the wide spectrum of possibilities for its use as a modern phytomedicinal agent.

Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know?

Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know? by Philip E. Tetlock
English | 2006 | ISBN: 0691128715, 0691123020 | 352 pages | EPUB | 5 MB

Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know?
The intelligence failures surrounding the invasion of Iraq dramatically illustrate the necessity of developing standards for evaluating expert opinion. This book fills that need. Here, Philip E. Tetlock explores what constitutes good judgment in predicting future events, and looks at why experts are often wrong in their forecasts.

Tetlock first discusses arguments about whether the world is too complex for people to find the tools to understand political phenomena, let alone predict the future. He evaluates predictions from experts in different fields, comparing them to predictions by well-informed laity or those based on simple extrapolation from current trends. He goes on to analyze which styles of thinking are more successful in forecasting. Classifying thinking styles using Isaiah Berlin's prototypes of the fox and the hedgehog, Tetlock contends that the fox–the thinker who knows many little things, draws from an eclectic array of traditions, and is better able to improvise in response to changing events–is more successful in predicting the future than the hedgehog, who knows one big thing, toils devotedly within one tradition, and imposes formulaic solutions on ill-defined problems. He notes a perversely inverse relationship between the best scientific indicators of good judgement and the qualities that the media most prizes in pundits–the single-minded determination required to prevail in ideological combat.

Clearly written and impeccably researched, the book fills a huge void in the literature on evaluating expert opinion. It will appeal across many academic disciplines as well as to corporations seeking to develop standards for judging expert decision-making.

Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle

FREEDownload : Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle

Mark Easley and Nicola Maffulli, "Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle"
English | ISBN: 1849964165 | 2011 | 488 pages | PDF | 28 MB

Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle
represents a novel approach to treatment of orthopedic problems in the foot and ankle. The gradual change of philosophy in the management of foot and ankle surgery means that patients require a less invasive approach to surgery and a consequent improvement in recovery time. Describing the techniques and, importantly, the indications for minimally invasive procedures for the management of foot and ankle ailments, this book will explain the management of various conditions and how they can be approached using minimally invasive techniques. However, rather than only concentrating on minimally invasive surgery of the foot and ankle, the authors will be examining the options open to surgeons operating in this area – both open surgical and arthroscopic – and explaining the benefits of each. Extensive radiographs, diagrams, and intra-operative pictures will illustrate the procedures described.

English | Aug 26, 2002 | ISBN: 3540437274 | 288 Pages | PDF | 20 MB
In Western Civilization Mathematics and Music have a long and interesting history in common, with several interactions, traditionally associated with the name of Pythagoras but also with a significant number of other mathematicians, like Leibniz, for instance. Mathematical models can be found for almost all levels of musical activities from composition to sound production by traditional instruments or by digital means.

Mathematics and Music: A Diderot Mathematical Forum
Modern music theory has been incorporating more and more mathematical content during the last decades. This book offers a journey into recent work relating music and mathematics. It contains a large variety of articles, covering the historical aspects, the influence of logic and mathematical thought in composition, perception and understanding of music and the computational aspects of musical sound processing. The authors illustrate the rich and deep interactions that exist between Mathematics and Music.

Sparse Representations and Compressive Sensing for Imaging and Vision

Sparse Representations and Compressive Sensing for Imaging and Vision by Vishal M. Patel and Rama Chellappa
English | 2013-02-08 | ISBN: 1461463807 | PDF | 112 pages | 4 MB

Sparse Representations and Compressive Sensing for Imaging and Vision
Compressed sensing or compressive sensing is a new concept in signal processing where one measures a small number of non-adaptive linear combinations of the signal. These measurements are usually much smaller than the number of samples that define the signal. From these small numbers of measurements, the signal is then reconstructed by non-linear procedure. Compressed sensing has recently emerged as a powerful tool for efficiently processing data in non-traditional ways. In this book, we highlight some of the key mathematical insights underlying sparse representation and compressed sensing and illustrate the role of these theories in classical vision, imaging and biometrics problems.
