Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels

FREEDownload : Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels

Gerhard A. Holzapfel, Ray W. Ogden, "Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 3211958738 | PDF | pages: 351 | 23 mb

Biomechanical Modelling at the Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Levels
This volume consists of Lecture Notes based on lectures delivered at the Advanced School on "" held at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine, Italy, in the period September 11-15, 2006. The course was presented by 6 lecturers, 2 from Europe, 3 from the USA and 1 from New Zealand, and was attended by more than 100 participants from 23 countries.

The mechanics of biological structures at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels is a multidisciplinary area of research that is expanding rapidly and brings together researchers in biology, medicine, engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science and applied mathematics. Against this background, the aim of the course was to present a state-of-the-art overview of biomechanical modelling at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels, with particular reference to nanos-tructures, cells, growth and remodelling, and the cardiovascular system, including experimental, continuum mechanical, computational and simulation aspects. This provides a rational basis for applications to, for example, (i) tissue engineering, which aims to identify the critical structural and mechanical requirements needed for each tissue construct, (ii) the design and development of implants, and (Hi) the improvement of diagnostics and therapeutical procedures that involve tissue mechanics.

The Profitable Supply Chain: A Practitioner’s Guide

FREEDownload : The Profitable Supply Chain: A Practitioner’s Guide

The Profitable Supply Chain: A Practitioner's Guide by Ramnath Ganesan
2014 | ISBN: 1484205278 | English | 296 pages | PDF | 7 MB

The Profitable Supply Chain: A Practitioner’s Guide
provides a first-principles approach to understanding the drivers of today’s successful supply chains, covering everything from inventory and demand management to network planning to technology-driven improvements in efficient supply chain management.

Apart from introducing the latest concepts and methods, supply chain expert and consultant Ramnath Ganesan provides numerous real-world examples and cases to clarify how his process-oriented approach can be applied to specific situations, together with spreadsheet functions when appropriate. Practitioners will be especially interested, for example, in the sections on assessing external factors for demand, modifying network routings in response to rising fuel prices, designing a framework for identifying issues and tracking actions, and instituting financial measures to track performance.

The book addresses situations found in such industries as consumer electronics, healthcare, telecommunications, consumer goods, industrial equipment, building materials, and many others. No matter the industry, all firms trading products face operational challenges in producing and/or moving goods in a geographically dispersed global network while fulfilling customer demand in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Such demands can only be supported by a rigorous approach that aligns supply with demand, an approach this book outlines clearly and simply.

The Profitable Supply Chain will prove a valuable reference for production schedulers, plant managers, material managers, demand planners, and supply chain executives. Among other things, it covers the following topics in great depth:

How to design and implement an efficient, scalable supply chain management process from the ground up—or improve the one you have.
How to maintain adequate inventory levels while reducing the cost of supplying products.
How to implement specific metrics that help improve supply chain performance and forecast accuracy.
How to gain competitive advantages through the latest advances in IT architecture and software.
This book will also be of immense value to information technology professionals. That includes enterprise application developers charged with designing and implementing a supply chain IT architecture, as well as those administering and maintaining an enterprise resource planning or advance planning system.

There are few areas in business more ripe for cost reductions than in the supply chain. The Profitable Supply Chain is therefore your go-to resource for making supply chain operations leaner, more efficient, and ultimately far more profitable than they are now.

What youll learn

How to maintain and move inventory optimally in the supply chain.
How to create an inventory strategy for your company.
How to increase the accuracy of your demand forecast.
How to create a sales and operations plan and then improve it on a daily basis.
How to analyze and deal with information distortion when dealing with channel partners.
How to involve company executives in the supply chain management process.
How to manage the evolution of supply chain practices, especially as technology improves and imperatives to "go green" gather force.

Shadows of Doubt: Negotiations of Masculinity in American Genre Films

Shadows of Doubt: Negotiations of Masculinity in American Genre Films (Contemporary Approaches to Film and Media Series) by Barry Keith Grant
2010 | ISBN: 0814334571 | English | 256 pages | PDF | 3 MB

Shadows of Doubt: Negotiations of Masculinity in American Genre Films
In , Barry Keith Grant questions the idea that Hollywood movies reflect moments of crisis in the dominant image of masculinity. Arguing instead that part of the mythic function of genre movies is to offer audiences an ongoing dialogue on issues of gender, Grant explores a wide range of genre films, including comedies, musicals, horror, science fiction, westerns, teen movies, and action films.

In ten chapters arranged chronologically according to the films discussed, Grant provides a series of close analyses of such disparate films such as Broken Blossoms, The Fatal Glass of Beer, Red River, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Night of the Living Dead, and The Hurt Locker to demonstrate that representations of masculinity in the movies involve a continuous process of ideological testing and negotiation. While some of the films considered offer important challenges to dominant representations of masculinity, others reveal an acceptance or capitulation to them.

Always attentive to the details of individual film texts, Grant also places the genre films he discusses within their historical contexts and the broader contexts and traditions of popular culture that inform them, including literature, theater, and music. Scholars of film and television studies as well as readers interested in gender studies will appreciate Shadows of Doubt.

Hikikomori: Adolescence without End

FREEDownload : Hikikomori: Adolescence without End

Hikikomori: Adolescence without End by Saito Tamaki
2013 | ISBN: 081665459X, 0816654581 | English | 208 pages | PDF | 3 MB

Hikikomori: Adolescence without End
This is the first English translation of a controversial Japanese best seller that made the public aware of the social problem of hikikomori, or "withdrawal"-a phenomenon estimated by the author to involve as many as one million Japanese adolescents and young adults who have withdrawn from society, retreating to their rooms for months or years and severing almost all ties to the outside world. Saito Tamaki's work of popular psychology provoked a national debate about the causes and extent of the condition.

Since Hikikomori was published in Japan in 1998, the problem of social withdrawal has increasingly been recognized as an international one, and this translation promises to bring much-needed attention to the issue in the English-speaking world. According to the New York Times, "As a hikikomori ages, the odds that he'll re-enter the world decline. Indeed, some experts predict that most hikikomori who are withdrawn for a year or more may never fully recover. That means that even if they emerge from their rooms, they either won't get a full-time job or won't be involved in a long-term relationship. And some will never leave home. In many cases, their parents are now approaching retirement, and once they die, the fate of the shut-ins-whose social and work skills, if they ever existed, will have atrophied-is an open question."

Drawing on his own clinical experience with hikikomori patients, Saito creates a working definition of social withdrawal and explains its development. He argues that hikikomori sufferers manifest a specific, interconnected series of symptoms that do not fit neatly with any single, easily identifiable mental condition, such as depression.

Destination Mars: New Explorations of the Red Planet

FREEDownload : Destination Mars: New Explorations of the Red Planet

Rod Pyle, "Destination Mars: New Explorations of the Red Planet"
English | ISBN: 1616145897 | 2012 | EPUB | 348 pages | 13,5 MB

Destination Mars: New Explorations of the Red Planet
In the next decade, NASA, by itself and in collaboration with the European Space Agency, is planning a minimum of four separate missions to Mars. Clearly, exciting times are ahead for Mars exploration. This is an insider’s look into the amazing projects now being developed here and abroad to visit the legendary red planet. Drawing on his contacts at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the author provides stunning insights into the history of Mars exploration and the difficulties and dangers of traveling there. After an entertaining survey of the human fascination with Mars over the centuries, the author offers an introduction to the geography, geology, and water processes of the planet. He then briefly describes the many successful missions by NASA and others to that distant world. But failure and frustration also get their due. As the author makes clear, going to Mars is not, and never will be, easy. Later in the book, he describes in detail what each upcoming mission will involve. In the second half of the book, he offers the reader a glimpse inside the world of Earth-based "Mars analogs," places on Earth where scientists are conducting research in hostile environments that are eerily "Martian." Finally, he constructs a probable scenario of a crewed expedition to Mars, so that readers can see how earlier robotic missions and human Earth simulations will fit together. All this is punctuated by numerous firsthand interviews with some of the finest Mars explorers of our day, including Stephen Squyres (Mars Exploration Rover), Bruce Murray (former director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory), and Peter Smith (chief of the Mars Phoenix Lander and the upcoming OSIRIS-REx missions). These stellar individuals give us an insider’s view of the difficulties and rewards of roaming the red planet. The author’s infectious enthusiasm and firsthand knowledge of the international space industry combine to make a uniquely appealing and accessible book about Mars.

Sports Cardiology: From Diagnosis to Clinical Management By Massimo Fioranelli, Gaetano Frajese
2012 | 321 Pages | ISBN: 8847027748 | PDF | 13 MB

Sports Cardiology: From Diagnosis to Clinical Management
This specialized reference textbook presents the physiological and pathophysiological aspects of cardiovascular diseases affecting the athlete population. The first part is a systematic explanation of the non-invasive and invasive diagnostic techniques used in cardiology. The second part examines the clinical approach to a great majority of the cardiological problems that involve the athlete population. All of the fields discussed in this textbook are treated from physiological and pathophysiological viewpoints, including the clinical and legal implications of athletes affected by diagnosed or unsuspected cardiovascular diseases. As such, this book is a particularly useful contribution to the literature for health care professionals, especially cardiologists (also fellows) and sports medicine physicians, providing them with the knowledge to make critical decisions regarding eligibility, thus preventing tragic events, and especially sudden death the most crucial event in sport.

Popular Music and Human Rights: World Music

Popular Music and Human Rights: World Music (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series) by Ian Peddie
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1409464059 | 200 pages | PDF | 2 MB

Popular Music and Human Rights: World Music
Popular music has long understood that human rights, if attainable at all, involve a struggle without end. The right to imagine an individual will, the right to some form of self-determination and the right to self-legislation have long been at the forefront of popular music's approach to human rights. At a time of such uncertainty and confusion, with human rights currently being violated all over the world, a new and sustained examination of cultural responses to such issues is warranted. In this respect music, which is always produced in a social context, is an extremely useful medium; in its immediacy music has a potency of expression that reaches far and wide.
