The Art and Business of Speech Recognition: Creating the Noble Voice by Blade Kotelly
English | Feb 1, 2003 | ISBN: 0321154924 | 208 Pages | CHM | 1 MB
Automated speech recognition (ASR) applications are poised to grow at a phenomenal pace. These systems allow you to speak naturally on the phone, while a computer system both understands what you say and answers knowledgeably.

The Art and Business of Speech Recognition: Creating the Noble Voice
We all increasingly experience such applications when we telephone airline or financial companies for information. Other industries experimenting with these systems include automotive, security, and consumer goods companies. The key to the success of these systems is the design and development of effective voice user interfaces (VUIs). This is both an art and a science that requires an understanding of language, user needs, business requirements, and digital technology. This book provides an overview of this emerging field. It explains, both for managers and developers/designers new to VUIs, what the issues, challenges, and opportunities are, and gives a clear sense of what a well-designed system requires. Using real-world examples from successful, large-scale systems, it shows how a good speech recognition system can save a company money, increase customer satisfaction, and even grow revenue.

Transnational Environmental Crime: Toward an Eco-global Criminology

Transnational Environmental Crime: Toward an Eco-global Criminology by Rob White
English | 2011-07-18 | ISBN: 1843928035, 1843928027 | PDF | 192 pages | 2,6 MB

Transnational Environmental Crime: Toward an Eco-global Criminology
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to and overview of eco-global criminology. Eco-global criminology refers to a criminological approach that is informed by ecological considerations and by a critical analysis that is global in scale and perspective. Based upon eco-justice conceptions of harm, it focuses on transgressions against environments, non-human species and humans.

At the centre of eco-global criminology is analysis of transnational environmental crime. This includes crimes related to pollution (of air, water and land) and crimes against wildlife (including illegal trade in ivory as well as live animals). It also includes those harms that pose threats to the environment more generally (such as global warming). In addressing these issues, the book deals with topics such as the conceptualization of environmental crime or harm, the researching of transnational environmental harm, climate change and social conflict, threats to biodiversity, toxic waste and the transference of harm, prosecution and sentencing of environmental crimes, and environmental victimization and transnational activism.
This book argues that analysis of transnational environmental crime needs to incorporate different notions of harm, and that the overarching perspective of eco-global criminology provides the framework for this.
Transnational Environmental Crime will be an essential resource for students, academics, policy-makers, environmental managers, police, magistrates and others with a general interest in environmental issues.

Make Talent Your Business: How Exceptional Managers Develop People While Getting Results (BK Business) by Wendy Axelrod and Jeannie Coyle
English | ISBN: 1605099317 | 2011 | 210 pages | PDF | 1,2 MB

Make Talent Your Business: How Exceptional Managers Develop People While Getting Results
Despite considerable investment in resources and tools, many managers and their companies struggle to get the level of talent they truly require. Make Talent Your Business gets to the heart of the matter: Managers themselves are in the best position to help people learn from experience (the uncontested major source of development). The books shows managers how to do this by using the five practices that work for leaders who are exceptional at building talent.

Based upon research with exceptional leaders from companies such as Corning, Intel, Merck, Kraft, Siemens, Marriott, Microsoft, Wells Fargo and Xerox this approach goes well beyond the usual managerial coaching and performance management. This breakthrough approach of five practices helps managers develop significant capabilities in their employees well beyond the scope of their current roles. It integrates development into day-to-day work, rather than making it a separate event. Managers who develop people this way get better results, retain talent, enhance their own reputations and certainly do not want to return to their former ways of managing.
