Capitalism: Its Origins and Evolution as a System of Governance

Capitalism: Its Origins and Evolution as a System of Governance by Bruce R. Scott
English | ISBN 10: 146141878X | 2011 | PDF | 705 pages | 11,6 MB
Two systems of governance, capitalism and democracy, prevail in the world today. Operating simultaneously in partially distinct domains, these systems rely on indirect governance through regulated competition to coordinate actors; inevitably, these systems influence and transform each other.

Capitalism: Its Origins and Evolution as a System of Governance
This book rejects the simple equation of capitalism with markets in favor of a three-level system, a model which recognizes that markets are administered by regulators through institutions and governed by a political authority with the power to regulate behavior, punish transgressors, and redesign institutions. This system's emergence required the sovereign to relinquish some power in order to release the energies of economic actors. Rather than spreading through an unguided natural process like trade, capitalism emerged where competitive pressures forced political authorities to take risks in order to achieve increased revenues by permitting markets for land, labor, and capital.

Dear Fiona: Letters from a Suspected Soviet Spy by Fiona Fullerton
2012 | ISBN: 1904380859 | English | 322 pages | PDF | 16 MB

Dear Fiona: Letters from a Suspected Soviet Spy
He was a suspected Cold War spy. She became the glamorous KGB double agent in a Bond movie. When a prisoner writes to a movie star, the best he can hope for is a signed photo. But when Alex wrote to the glamorous Fiona Fullerton she was beguiled by the artistry of his letters and poems. In this heartfelt memoir, Fiona Fullerton recalls-for the first time-her 12 year correspondence with Prisoner 789959 Alexander Alexandrowicz -including his wise counsel about her marriage, divorce and career at the forefront of cinema, TV and theatre. Based on their original letters, the narrative is one of contrasts-about a man in the darkest days of his prolonged incarceration and a woman surrounded by the brightest lights of show business. Shocked by his long sentence, Alex protested his innocence and railed against the system, often from solitary confinement-whilst she roamed the world, a celebrity and a nomad. From this unlikely juxtaposition developed the friendship at the centre of this book. The true story of how two people from social extremes forged a 30 year bond of friendship against all odds. It also tells of how they came to rely on each other and the author's search for him after he disappeared. 'Have you ever heard of Nadejda Philaretovna von Meck? She and Tchaikovsky were corresponding for years, they never met-and yet he produced his finest work for her. My finest work shall be for you It is you alone who has given me strength while I have been in prison, the strength to restore lost and dying hope into burning resolution'. 'Yes, the bond between us will get stronger, Alex. It will never die now. I'll always be here when you need me. I need you too, don't forget, so together we'll muddle through'. Reviews 'What a lovely, lovely book compelling, gripping, moving, insightful': Erwin James, Guardian correspondent. Author Fiona Fullerton was one of Britain's most well known and versatile actresses, starring in movies, television and West End theatres, holding a high profile media presence for over 20 years. She then became a Property Columnist, writer and property investment guru, reaching a vastly different audience. Foreword Edward Fitzgerald CBE QC is one of the UK's leading lawyers specialising in criminal law, public law and international human rights law. He has featured in many leading cases at home and abroad. He was Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year in 2009, Silk of the Year in 2005 and winner of The Times Justice Human Rights Award in 1998.

Self-Determination and Secession in International Law

Christian Walter, "Self-Determination and Secession in International Law"
English | ISBN: 019870237X | 2014 | 336 pages | EPUB | 0.5 MB

Self-Determination and Secession in International Law
Peoples and minorities in many parts of the world assert a right to self-determination, autonomy, and even secession from a state, which naturally conflicts with that state's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The right of a people to self-determination and secession has existed as a concept within international law since the American Declaration of Independence in 1776, but the exact definition of these concepts, and the conditions required for their application, remain unclear. The Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice concerning the Declaration of Independency of Kosovo (2010), which held that the Kosovo declaration of independence was not in violation of international law, has only led to further questions.

This book takes four conflicts in the post-Soviet Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) as a starting point for examining the current state of the law of self-determination and secession. Four entities, Transnistria (Moldova), South Ossetia, Abkhazia (both Georgia), and Nagorno-Karabakh (Armenia), claim to be entitled not only to self-determination but also to secession from their mother state. For this entitlement they rely on historic affiliations, and on charges of discrimination and massive human rights violations committed by their mother state. This book sets out its analysis of these critical issue in three parts, providing a detailed understanding of the principles of international law on which they rely: The first part sets out the contours and meaning of self-determination and secession, including an overall assessment of secession within the Commonwealth of Independent States. The second section provides case studies investigating the events in Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, and Nagorno-Karabach in greater detail. The third and final section extends the scope of the examination, providing a comparative analysis of similar conflicts involving questions of self-determination and secession in Kosovo, Western Sahara, and Eritrea.

Flexible Software Design: Systems Development for Changing Requirements by Bruce Johnson
A developer's knowledge of a computing system's requirements is necessarily imperfect because organizations change. Many requirements lie in the future and are unknowable at the time the system is designed and built. To avoid burdensome maintenance costs developers must therefore rely on a system's ability to change gracefully-its flexibility. Flexible Software Design: Systems Development for Changing Requirements demonstrates the design principles and techniques that enable the design of software that empowers business staff to make functional changes to their systems with little or no professional IT intervention.

The book concentrates on the design aspects of system development, the area with the most flexibility leverage. Divided into four parts, the text begins by introducing the fundamental concepts of flexibility, explaining the reality of imperfect knowledge and how development participants must change their thinking to implement flexible software. The second part covers design guidelines, stable identifiers, stable information structures, the Generic Entity Cloud concept, and regulatory mechanisms that give business staff control over system modifications. Part three relates strategic information systems planning to flexible systems. It examines the elicitation of requirements and the relevance of agile methods in a flexible systems environment. It also discusses practical aspects of stable identifier design and compares the testing of traditional and flexible software. In part four, the book concludes with details of the flexible UniverSIS system and an explanation of the applications and extensions of the Generic Entity Cloud tools.

The combination of smart design and smart work offered in Flexible Software Design can materially benefit your organization by radically reducing the systems maintenance burden.
