Elder Northfield's Home: or, Sacrificed on the Mormon Altar (Legacies of Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers) by A. Jennie Bartlett
English | Feb 1, 2015 | ISBN: 0803271840 | 364 Pages | EPUB/MOBI/AZW3/PDF (Converted) | 6 MB
The practice of plural marriage, commonly known as polygamy, stirred intense controversy in postbellum America until 1890, when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first officially abolished the practice.

Elder Northfield’s Home: or, Sacrificed on the Mormon Altar
Elder Northfield's Home, published by A. Jennie Bartlett in 1882, is both a staunchly antipolygamy novel and a call for the sentimental repatriation of polygamy's victims. Her book traces the fate of a virtuous and educated English immigrant woman, Marion Wescott, who marries a Mormon elder, Henry Northfield. Shocked when her husband violates his promise not to take a second wife, Marion attempts to flee during the night, toddler son in her arms and pulling her worldly possessions in his toy wagon. She returns to her husband, however, and the balance of the novel traces the effects of polygamy on Marion, Henry, and their children; their eventual rejection of plural marriage; and their return to a normal and healthy family structure.

Nicole Tonkovich's critical introduction includes both historical contextualization and comments on selected primary documents, providing a broader look at the general public's reception of the practice of polygamy in the nineteenth century.

A Problem Seminar
English | Mathematics, Physics | 1. November 1982 | ISBN-10: 0387907653 | 124 pages | Djvu | 3.5 mb
There was once a bumper sticker that read, "Remember the good old days when air was clean and sex was dirty?" Indeed, some of us are old enough to remember not only those good old days, but even the days when Math was/un(!), not the ponderous THEOREM, PROOF, THEOREM, PROOF

A Problem Seminar
, . . . , but the whimsical, "I've got a good prob lem. " Why did the mood change? What misguided educational philoso phy transformed graduate mathematics from a passionate activity to a form of passive scholarship? In less sentimental terms, why have the graduate schools dropped the Problem Seminar? We therefore offer "" to those students who haven't enjoyed the fun and games of problem solving. CONTENTS Preface v Format I Problems 3 Estimation Theory 11 Generating Functions 17 Limits of Integrals 19 Expectations 21 Prime Factors 23 Category Arguments 25 Convexity 27 Hints 29 Solutions 41 FORMAT This book has three parts: first, the list of problems, briefly punctuated by some descriptive pages; second, a list of hints, which are merely meant as words to the (very) wise; and third, the (almost) complete solutions. Thus, the problems can be viewed on any of three levels: as somewhat difficult challenges (without the hints), as more routine problems (with the hints), or as a textbook on "how to solve it" (when the solutions are read). Of course it is our hope that the book can be enjoyed on any of these three levels.

Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe (Audiobook)

Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe (Audiobook) By Bill Bryson, read by William Roberts
Unabridged edition 2013 | 5 hours and 38 mins | ISBN: 1620647176 | MP3 32 kbps | 126 MB
Having seen Europe with a rucksack on his back and a youthful spring in his step twenty years earlierlike many of his generation, in search of enlightenment, beer, and womenBill Bryson decides to make a sentimental journey back to that familiar territory, to wander perilously through the minefields of linguistic confusion and through innumerable European cities in search of a room for the night and a good square meal. With characteristic caustic wit and a cynical eye, he suffers every known peculiarity of every country he visits and in the process creates an unforgettably incisive, honest, and funny portrait of modern Europe, from the frozen wastes of Scandinavia to the chaotic tumult of Istanbul.
