Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter By Antonia Fraser
Publisher: Na.n A. Ta.le.se 2010 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 0385532504 | EPUB | 12 MB

Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter
Fraser is a highly regarded British biographer, and the late Harold Pinter, her husband, was a Nobel-winning British playwright. So, the circle they generally traveled in was made up of not only fellow writers but also, because of their individual and combined celebrity, fellow celebrities. Fraser's latest book is both joyous and sad. The former because she shares diary entries concerning her relationship with Pinter (they lived together from August 1975 until Christmas 2008), and it was obviously a stimulating love-match. And sad because the book ends when it does because of Pinter's death from cancer; his struggle with the disease had been years-long. As expected, given their fame and the fame of their associates, lots of name-dropping goes on here. This is not, of course, the story of two starving artists trying to scratch together a living in some cold-water flat. But privileged as they were, they nevertheless experienced the normal highs and lows together, and the result is a poignant read. Serious readers will generate demand for this title, and they will respond with gratitude to Fraser's intimacy.

The Scramble for the Amazon and the “Lost Paradise” of Euclides da Cunha

FREEDownload : The Scramble for the Amazon and the “Lost Paradise” of Euclides da Cunha

The Scramble for the Amazon and the "Lost Paradise" of Euclides da Cunha by Susanna B. Hecht
2013 | ISBN: 0226322815 | English | 632 pages | EPUB | 17 MB

The Scramble for the Amazon and the “Lost Paradise” of Euclides da Cunha
The fortunes of the late nineteenth century's imperial and industrial powers depended on a single raw material-rubber-with only one source: the Amazon basin. And so began the scramble for the Amazon-a decades-long conflict that found Britain, France, Belgium, and the United States fighting with and against the new nations of Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil for the forest's riches. In the midst of this struggle, Euclides da Cunha, engineer, journalist, geographer, political theorist, and one of Brazil's most celebrated writers, led a survey expedition to the farthest reaches of the river, among the world's most valuable, dangerous, and little-known landscapes.

The Scramble for the Amazon tells the story of da Cunha's terrifying journey, the unfinished novel born from it, and the global strife that formed the backdrop for both. Haunted by his broken marriage, da Cunha trekked through a beautiful region thrown into chaos by guerrilla warfare, starving migrants, and native slavery. All the while, he worked on his masterpiece, a nationalist synthesis of geography, philosophy, biology, and journalism he named the Lost Paradise. Da Cunha intended his epic to unveil the Amazon's explorers, spies, natives, and brutal geopolitics, but, as Susanna B. Hecht recounts, he never completed it-his wife's lover shot him dead upon his return.

At once the biography of an extraordinary writer, a masterly chronicle of the social, political, and environmental history of the Amazon, and a superb translation of the remaining pieces of da Cunha's project, The Scramble for the Amazon is a work of thrilling intellectual ambition.

An Immigrant Soldier in the Mexican War

Frederick Zeh – An Immigrant Soldier in the Mexican War
Texas A&M University Press | 1995 | ISBN: 0890966672, 0890966680 | English | 137 pages | PDF | 39 MB
Elma Dill Russell Spencer Series in the West and Southwest Number Thirteen
This book is a translation of the serialized accounts of Private Frederick Zeh in the Mexican War from a German-language newspaper in the USA done thirty years after the war with Mexico. Zeh's telling is clear and adds new insight into the plight of the common soldier. A large percent of the US Army was foreign-born, so this book sheds light into a neglected aspect of the war; namely foreign-born soldiers fighting in the American ranks.
Frederick Zeh arrived in the USA and found hard times. He recounts the debt slavery (Purposely being paid/fed just enough to keep him from starving by his employer in New Jersey) and being fearful of the Nativist attacks against immigrants in nearby Philadelphia, which obliged him to join the US Regular Army in a special rocket/howitzer unit.
This is an intimate view from a common soldier. Frederick Zeh arrived at Vera Cruz and fought in the battles of Scott's campaign from Vera Cruz to Mexico City as an artilleryman. His observations of the Siege of Vera Cruz, Battle of Cerro Gordo, etc. are very precise. Do not expect much on grand strategy, as this is a tale of the dangers & hardships of a man and his comrades-in-arms.
Editors have corrected any minor errors by Zeh and provided excellent endnotes for clarification and further study.
This work could be read in a short time and pondered for much longer.
