Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter By Antonia Fraser
Publisher: Na.n A. Ta.le.se 2010 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 0385532504 | EPUB | 12 MB

Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter
Fraser is a highly regarded British biographer, and the late Harold Pinter, her husband, was a Nobel-winning British playwright. So, the circle they generally traveled in was made up of not only fellow writers but also, because of their individual and combined celebrity, fellow celebrities. Fraser's latest book is both joyous and sad. The former because she shares diary entries concerning her relationship with Pinter (they lived together from August 1975 until Christmas 2008), and it was obviously a stimulating love-match. And sad because the book ends when it does because of Pinter's death from cancer; his struggle with the disease had been years-long. As expected, given their fame and the fame of their associates, lots of name-dropping goes on here. This is not, of course, the story of two starving artists trying to scratch together a living in some cold-water flat. But privileged as they were, they nevertheless experienced the normal highs and lows together, and the result is a poignant read. Serious readers will generate demand for this title, and they will respond with gratitude to Fraser's intimacy.

Paul Corner, "Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes: Fascism, Nazism, Communism"
2009 | ISBN-10: 0199566526 | 248 pages | PDF | 1 MB

Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes: Fascism, Nazism, Communism
Fascism, Nazism, and Communism dominated the history of much of the twentieth century, yet comparatively little attention has focused on popular reactions to the regimes that sprang from these ideologies. Popular Opinion in Totalitarian Regimes is the first volume to investigate popular reactions to totalitarian rule in the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and the communist regimes in Poland and East Germany after 1945.

The contributions, written for this volume by internationally acknowledged experts in their fields, move beyond the rather static vision provided by traditional themes of consent and coercion to construct a more nuanced picture of everyday life in the various regimes. The book provides many new insights into the ways totalitarian regimes functioned and the reasons for their decline, encouraging comparisons between the different regimes and stimulating re-evaluation of long-established positions.

The Teacher’s Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom

FREEDownload : The Teacher’s Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom

The Teacher's Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom
English | Education | 5. November 2007 | ISBN-10: 038770891X | 267 pages | pdf | 2 mb
Cooperative learning is widely endorsed as a pedagogical practice that promotes student learning. Recently, the research focus has moved to the role of teachers' discourse during cooperative learning and its effects on the quality of group discussions and the learning achieved.

The Teacher’s Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom
However, although the benefits of cooperative learning are well documented, implementing this pedagogical practice in classrooms is a challenge that many teachers have difficulties accomplishing.

Difficulties may occur because teachers often do not have a clear understanding of the basic tenets of cooperative learning and the research and theoretical perspectives that have informed this practice and how they translate into practical applications that can be used in their classrooms. In effect, what do teachers need to do to affect the benefits widely documented in research?

A reluctance to embrace cooperative learning may also be due to the challenge it poses to teachers' control of the learning process, the demands it places on classroom organisational changes, and the personal commitments teachers need to make to sustain their efforts. Moreover, a lack of understanding of the key role teachers need to play in embedding cooperative learning into the curricula to foster open communication and engagement among teachers and students, promote cooperative investigation and problem-solving, and provide students with emotionally and intellectually stimulating learning environments may be another contributing factor.

provides readers with a comprehensive overview of these issues with clear guidelines on how teachers can embed cooperative learning into their classroom curricula to obtain the benefits widely attributed to this pedagogical practice. It does so by using language that is appropriate for both novice and experienced educators. The volume provides: an overview of the major research and theoretical perspectives that underpin the development of cooperative learning pedagogy; outlines how specific small group experiences can promote thinking and learning; discusses the key role teachers play in promoting student discourse; and, demonstrates how interaction style among students and teachers is crucial in facilitating discussion and learning. The collection of chapters includes many practical illustrations, drawn from the contributors' own research of how teachers can use cooperative learning pedagogy to facilitate thinking and learning among students across different educational settings.

The Columbia Guide to America in the 1960s By David Farber, Beth Bailey
Publisher: Col.umbia Univ,ersity Pre,ss 2001 | 448 Pages | ISBN: 0231113722 | PDF | 1 MB

The Columbia Guide to America in the 1960s
Eminent historians Farber (Age of Great Dreams) and Bailey (Sex in the Heartland) present an accessible, state-of-the-art overview of the turbulent Sixties. Part narrative history and interpretation, part almanac, chronology, and glossary, the book offers an introspective yet entertaining investigation for those who remember the age as well as for those just being introduced to it. The most stimulating chapter includes essays by contributing scholars who assess the legacies of the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, the New Left, the women's movement, and the sexual revolution. An excellent glossary, which includes one-paragraph to one-page views of well-known political leaders and such cultural icons as Twiggy, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and Janis Joplin, bolsters Farber's somewhat sketchy historical summary.

Advanced Introduction to the Austrian School of Economics

FREEDownload : Advanced Introduction to the Austrian School of Economics

Advanced Introduction to the Austrian School of Economics (Elgar Advanced Introductions series) by Randall G. Holcombe
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1781955743 , 1781955735 | 144 pages | PDF | 2,5 MB
Elgar Advanced Introductions are stimulating and thoughtful introductions to major fields in the social sciences and law, expertly written by some of the world s leading scholars. Designed to be accessible yet rigorous, they offer concise and lucid surveys of the substantive and policy issues associated with discrete subject areas.

Advanced Introduction to the Austrian School of Economics
'Randy Holcombe's Advanced Introduction to the Austrian School of Economics is a comprehensive and extremely readable introduction to the main ideas of this school of economic thought. Holcombe uses plenty of everyday examples and common sense wisdom to explain often esoteric sounding doctrines in very plain language. The result is an exemplar in clear thinking and clear writing. Ultimately, there is only 'good' economics and 'bad' economics. Holcombe demonstrates throughout this book why the common sense economics of Menger, Böhm-Bawerk, Mises, Hayek, Kirzner and Rothbard is part of the great lineage of 'good' economics, and how these ideas have a powerful and continuing relevance to science, scholarship, policy, and a broader world view about how the world works.'
– Peter J. Boettke, George Mason University, US

'I have become increasingly aware that, more times than not, mainstream economists who have an opinion about Austrian economics got that opinion from the critics of the Austrian school. This circumstance makes Randy Holcombe's insightful, refreshing and upbeat 'Advanced Introduction' an especially welcome addition to the Austrian literature.'
– Roger W. Garrison, Auburn University, US

Erudite, accessible and lucidly written, this book provides both a stimulating introduction and excellent summary of the core principles, ideas and diversity of modern Austrian economics. The Austrian school was well within the mainstream of economic thought by the 1930s, but fell from prominence by the middle of the twentieth century. There was a renewed interest in the Austrian school s ideas beginning in the 1970s which has accelerated recently, but many economists do not have a good understanding of the distinguishing values and characteristics that set it apart. This volume is aimed at readers who already have a familiarity with economic analysis, but would like to know more about the distinct philosophies of the Austrian school. The book succinctly but thoroughly covers all the major issues including:

– the market process decentralized knowledge and the role of firms and markets

– economic calculation

– money, banking and business cycles

– the resurgence of the Austrian school.

Contents: Preface 1. The Market Process 2. Decentralized Knowledge: The Role of Firms and Markets 3. Economic Calculation 4. Money, Banking, and Business Cycles 5. The Resurgence of the Austrian School References Index
